Shortening compound draw length with cables+string

My compound bow is currently at its minimum draw length, which has been alright for me for a couple of years. However, in the last few months I've improved my recurve form. Part of that has involved losing a little off my draw length to make things less critical at full draw and make less use of the arm muscles. As a result, my compound's draw length is now too long for comfort.

Some obvious options are to replace the bow (except I ain't got the money) or replace the cam modules (tricky to find for an old Hoyt Aspen).

I'm aware that a compound's draw length can be shortened by using shorter cables and a shorter string. But how advisable is this?

I think the shorter draw length can be achieved with shorter string or longer cables(not shorter cables). If you change just the string, the brace height increases. Longer cables reduces brace height. Changing both would have a greater effect on draw length, possibly with less change to brace height. Making both shorter would increase brace height and not change the draw length very much.
On the power stroke, if you imagine the cams winding in the bowstring, they will come to rest at a point that is earlier in that cycle compared to the one they reach at present. You will be losing that last little bit of push from the string into the arrow.
If there are twists in your cables that can be undone, try untwisting them and see how you get on. The twists can be put back later, if necessary. Like wise for the string.
(if you use a long d-loop, shortening that can produce some of the effects you want, with no change to string references)
