Can some Explain 3rd Axis

I have searched the Forum but have drawn a blank.

Could some explain to exactly what is the 3rd Axis, I have asked around and got differing answers, which range from the confused to it doesn't exist, the reason I'm asking is that I have a coaching exam coming up on the weekend, and I just feel that I'm going to be asked this question.

Several points there Phil, Was the 3rd axis explained properly on the course, I totally didn't understand Jan all I got was that it doesn't exist proper posture etc bla bla bla. Will your dingle dangle thing hold up seeing that we are starting @ 08:30... I've asked afew archers ie Bob, Ian & Chigey about this and just got no where.

On the topic of the certificate I have it on my GNAS card with expiry date if they don't except that then it is going to be shoved where the sun doesn't shine, im not redoing it.

On the talk it will be emailed tomorrow lost my address book, and didn't have anyones email

Hi, 3rd axis is usually referred to when setting sights square on bows that use a bubble. As bubbles usually equal scopes, a 3rd axis adjustment option is normally only a feature of compound sights. It is really only relevant when shooting up and down hill shots in field archery.

You can quite easily set your sight track square to the string, and then your scope bubble level to the track with a spirit level. These could be called the 1st and 2nd axis of a sight set up and should be square.

To visualise the 3rd axis, imagine looking down on your scope from directly above, and making sure it is square in that plane. If it is not, when you shoot an uphill or downhill shot the bubble can track over. You then end up canting the bow to get the bubble back in the middle, causing you to miss to the side.

Hope that helps!

while what most of what ben said is true, The 3rd axis comes into play any time your arm moves from the horizontal position. Shooting 30-90 meters on a flat field, is the same as shooting up hill. If the third axis is off, you will be shooting out the sides of the X. If you are going to the right up hill, then you will shoot left down hill. A sight leveling jig is a must for any one using a bubble on their sight.
