Maybe with modern arrows with a more refined barreling design increasing the natural spin maybe this is not the case? Maybe some more tests are needed even though Fletchett's tests seem to be definitive.

I try to explain the vanes position.

The vanes are in horizontal (3 o`clock and 9 o`clock) position.
The string obviously in vertical position.

I am a compound shooter and I am using a Trophy Taker SS2 with 0.10 blade.

The vanes are never touching any part of the rest, just the shaft running between the edges.

About the wind.
I have been using 3 spin wings for years. Because the parachute effect, if the weather is windy the arrows with 3 spin wings are flying horrible on the last 20-25 meters on 90m.

I compared the two spin wings with ffp vanes in strong wind.
Aiming to the gold at 70m with ffp-175, and my arrows went to the blue.
Aiming to the same place with the two spin wings and the arrows went to the red and the gold border 3 red/3 gold.(X10 450)

The two spin wings (the elites) have more than enough arrow rotation to stabilize the arrow on any distance.

One observation. Elite sping wings have more curl than normal vanes. Maybe this is why you get away with just 2. I always found elites to produce too much drag outdoors to shoot them in the wind. Maybe there is enough spin with just 2 vanes to stabalise the arrow flight.
