points - screw in or break off?

Apart from the obvious, such as screw in points allow for finer tuning, etc., what do you feel are the pros and cons for these points? Please discuss...

Hi Clicki, Are these to go with the new Navigators. and the forthcoming Clicki special bow ?

Personally, I go for the simplicity of the one piece. I can understand the people who go for inserts though. I have even used them in the past. But always ended up returning to a nice simple one piece.

Looking at the Easton inserts, they do look like they go a long way into the shaft. So I would suspect this will give the effect of a stiffer spine. Thus needing a heavier point to counteract.

I have a couple of these kicking around...and they are indeed quite long....from memory, about 3"..

FWIW in my mind screw in points are a pain in the ****. No matter what gimmicks you use to try and keep them in tight they work their way loose. I gave up on them and went to the one piece break off's.

ACE break off points

+
ACE inserts and points

I doubt these are to scale, but I have to think the inserts AND points have got to be as long at the break off ones.

ok screw in

pros:
allow for lots of fiddleing
can change the weight back easily if not right

cons:

they never stay in tight unless you use some sort of glue
they can be prone to breaking as if not screwed in completely when they impact with the target they will strip the thread and eventually you will loose the points.

from my experience, although once you snap them off thats it, break off points are better.

once you know what weight you want you can stick them in and forget about them.

That's what worries me, Brian. I like to keep things simple. Plus the break offs are cheaper.

Using quicks catalogue as a guide £19.80 for a Doz one piece, £27.60 for the required insert/point combo, the break offs you can't realistically add or reattach weight once broken off, break offs can't unscrew, even loctited Insert/points have the possibility to come undone. Insert/Points fell out of favour and became unnecessary since the advent of adjustable tiller risers.

Which seems to go back to my first post. If they are 3" long as Tarkwin says, they will make the shaft react stiffer. Then to counteract, the point weight will need to be increased to weaken the shaft reaction. To someone on a light and short draw, this would mean the arrow diving steeply at long range to to the FOC being moved forwards ?

Well to an oldy, that's how I think. And the screw in piles used to come undone a lot 30 years ago too.

On this case, I keep thinking of one of my lecturers at college on my HND, his favourite saying. KISS, Keep It Simple Stupid.
