| Fitting threaded piles I recently bought a few bits and pieces to make my first wooden arrows. I thought I was buying taper fit brass piles, but parallel threaded arrived. Silly question: how do you fit them? Presumably the shaft has to be reduced in diameter a little, but what's the best way to do that? How do you grip the pile without damaging the nice shiny finish? Should they be glued as well?

| ...threaded piles. OK - don't know how you "should" do it but what I do is use the taper tool just for a couple of turns to give them somewhere to start. I then use slow set epoxy and screw them down with pliers. The pliers do mark the brass - haven't tried very hard to find a way of avoiding that as I usually break the arrows soon enough anyway!

| Rather than use pliers. Mount the pile in a battery powered hand drill that has a torque adjustable chuck. set the torque to medium and push and go. When the pile is on firmly, the clutch will release the power to the chuck. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||

| you could put tape round the pile first this can minimise any chance of marking  |

| If you have no power tools. wrap the pile intape. Get someone to hold the pliers or put the pile into a wood lined vice and screw the arrow into it. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||

| If you can drill a suitable sized hole for the pile into a piece of hardwood. Saw a slot through the hole, and grip the pile in the slotted block in a vice or workmate or clamp. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||

| I like to keep my equipment and tools tidy and in pristine condition. Both my roadbike and MTB sparkle. Then I use them. There are very few steel parts on archery equipment apart from screwthreads that can be coated with string wax as a dry lube. So not a lot to rust. the other metal bits are anodised or stainless.Wipe your arrows if they get dirty but shoot in all weathers and conditions. If you are carful with your piles they will be relatively scratch free. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
