Speed comparisons are essentially meaningless unless the set ups are correctly tuned, so just swapping in a pair of limbs isn't a fair comparison. Also, "feeling stiffer" doesn't give a limb extra speed compared to one that feels smoother. In fact, if you look at the draw force curve of limbs that are smoother at full draw (Border, W&W Winex etc.) you will find they actually store more energy. Of course, whether all that energy is delivered efficiently depends on other factors, such as the set up/tune.

In the top limbs, you see variations in price, small variations in speed, variations in stability (some quite major - look at the FX) and build/material quality. Probably the most important factors are:

1. Feel - whether the individual likes the feel of the limb.
2. Brand - whether the individual likes the top archers who shoot the limb, or thinks the advertising is pretty, or has some other rationale for "believing" in the limb.

You might want to get yourself a copy of the latest Bow International magazine too. There's an article in there comparing many of the top limbs (with the exception of Border, sorry Kae!), and Andrew Smith writes about his 'real world' findings on Inno's, Winex, Extremes, G3's and Athletes (IIRC). It's quite an interesting read, and although the Inno's do well, and he clearly doesnt rate G3's, it's interesting to see his POV.
