Question Fletchings, to spin or not to spin??

Can any one offer some guidance, opinions please regarding fletchings??
I have been out of archery for about 5 years, and I am now getting myself back into some kind of shape to start again in April 2008. (got a bit porky)

On browsing through a few catalouges, I am now confused over the various different fletchings available.

When i first started in 1987, it was very straightforward, aluminium arrows, basic fletchings and either dacron or kevlar for a string.

Now, the array is . I do have ACC's (got in 1997), which are much better than my old XX75's but cannot decide what to get put on my new ACE's (promised by the wife for April's birthday). I did try some spin wings, but they did keep falling off or getting damaged. Any suggestions??

I use Spin Wings all the time. I do get few damaged ones but only if I go through the Boss or if I get in the Green stuff . But no probs otherwise.

I use spinwings on my Navs (have done on all my carbons). I don't know whether there actually is a difference, but as a psychological thing I prefer to shoot them. Plus, I don't mind fletching so if one gets damaged I can easily just pop another one back on.

I have been using Kurly Vanes for the past 4 years on ACEs and only need to replace 3-4 per year and always due to damage, not falling off.

If you're getting a lot of falling off/damaged wings you should check your clearance. Did you rotate your nocks a bit when you fitted the wings to make sure the bottom one clears the button? Like those who have posted above, I use spinwings, and have found them almost bombproof so long as they clear properly, and very easy to refletch if one does get damaged.

When attaching any fletchings always be sure to make sure all bits are superclean before adhering. I use methalated spirits, but I believe many use acetone (I don't becuase I fear if it gets on knocks it may degrade the knock material and having had one knock snap on me I wouldn't want it to happen too often)

Talking

I used to shoot k vanes and never had any problem with them falling off but when the aae shield cut fletches came out i changed over to them i put 3 on 1deg offset and 3 on straight no noticeable difference also my sight marks at 60 with k vanes were about 30 cm lower than the shield cuts.It depends on you if you like spins then go for them or any other ones.

I use AAE plasti fletch max 2"shield cut and can tell you they are bomb proof in the past few months I have managed to shoot through my clicker and have an arrow pass through the middle of a straw boss (old one ) both times the fleches stayed put with no damage and like Madmac I got a good improvement in sight mark .It will be a long time before I use anything else .

Welcome from a fellow Whitehart owner.

IMO I would fletch with straight vanes, get back up to speed and then think about changing, until you are back in the groove it will make little difference.
