All Carbon Arrows

I have no problems with people shooting all carbons providing they agree not to leave the field before any lost arrows are recovered. A torch should be made available, as should a cup of tea and a bacon butty the next morning.

I've never been to or heard of a tournament that has had this rule and there is no such rule at our club either, although is extremely hard to find them in the grass

The closest I've come across was this summer's Outdoor BUSA where carbon arrows were requested not to be shot "without good reason". What a good reason would consist of wasn't stated, but as a number of our archers had bought themselves redlines to get the distance for a FITA they had the choice of buying new arrows, asking if being unable to afford new arrows was a good reason, or shooting heavy allies, which had been replaced because they struggled to reach 90m!!!

Admittedly it ended up being more a case of all arrows had to be found by the end of the day, and that there wouldn't be lots of time allowed between ends to hunt for arrows, if you were short, tough. But they did have to get us students through a FITA round.

nb - we usually do an Albian in six hours, so you can imagine how long it took us to get through a FITA!!!

I can't remember where I saw it, but I have seen a competition that did not allow all carbons. I remember noticing it because I shoot all carbons myself. Our club is fine about it because we have a dedicated shooting area, not used by anyone else.

Sherwood Archers Record Status Weekend 7th & 8th of June 2008 clearly states on the entry form

'PLEASE NOTE: Pure carbon arrow shafts will not be allowed to be shot on the field'

This is a FITA record status and I thought Sherwood Archers field was a dedicated archery field so I must admit to being a little puzzled. However it is their field so I suppose they can do what they want on it.

Really, not according to FITA Rule 7.3.1.7 "Arrows of any type may be used ...."

We at Sherwood Archers do ban pure carbon arrows with the permission of GNAS as do Kirby Muxloe and others. Our field is used for a lot of disabled sports as well as archery. I hope that this helps clear things up a little

Thanks for clearing it up, after all its your field and you did publish this condition on your entry form so everyone is aware when they enter. I think some archers however feel that as it is a record status event they should be allowed to shoot FITA legal equipment to make the event comparible to other record status events.

This brings up another interesting side issue. GNAS seem quite happy to allow clubs to ignore FITA regulations when it comes to choice of equipment yet less so when it comes to overriding FITA on the age of judges selected for the Olympics.

I could be wrong here (And I am sure someone will correct me) but did I not read that FITA had imposed maximum age limits for judges and GNAS said they could not overrule FITA despite UK legislation on age discrimination. Yet FITA have said carbon arrows can be shot at any record status event and GNAS have given clubs the option to change this rule as they see fit.

Not getting at you Sherwood Archers as my visits to your shoots have always been pleasant and we have come away impressed with your organisation

Thanks for clarifying.... but I feel there will be some non-understanding archers that feel that FITA rules are the be all and end all with little thought or care as to clubs that have to share with other sports.
