Oberon Tab Face

Those using the oberon material as your tab face. How long do they last you? (and how often do you shoot of course) Mine seems to wear out pretty fast with some unusally wear. The most wear being at the middle finger area. The worn out area looks like it got scrapped off and looks caved in. It'll be very thin at the middle of this "cave". My Oberon usually lasts me about 2-3 months of usage. I don't shoot a lot. Probably 3-4 times a week max. And each session would probably be 200 or less arrows, with some exceptions. Is this normal? I have about 4-5 spare pieces cut out and ready to replace once the face on my tab wears. I don't really mind as it isn't as expensive as cordovan and doesn't need to be seasoned like cordovan does. I'm just wondering if the others experience the same lifespan with their oberon.

Sounds like nock point wear? Is this the place where the nock point is contacting your tab? Maybe try a softer nocking point, e.g. change brass nocks if you have them

Hmm its definitely not nock point wear. My nocking point is made of dental floss and isn't contacting the main area of wear.

Until this week I've rotated my face material so that what was the face became the backing and so on...
It's definitely true that the Oberon 'settles in' quickly, so I've quite happily stuck with it over the last...um, don't know - when were we trialling it?
Bit of a hiccup over the last week or so in so far as at the end of a Fita (last end) it split right across the top finger - felt it immediately I drew the arrow - hanging by a thread which gave way as soon as I loosed (don't know where that bit ended up). The replacement material was somewhat thicker and had I allowed for that I would have not used the backing layer, but at that stage there's little point in mucking about.

Hi to Zippo, what centre serving material are you using? Is it Angel? If it is then it would appear that the serving cuts the Oberon quite quickly as the serving material has a rough and raised pile which crushes and *saws* the foam. I'm getting a few reports of this happening but I'm selling at least 4 squares daily and the material has now been going for 2 years without any major issues. For what it is worth I use BCY braided centre serving and have now shot my Blue face of Oberon since just before Christmas and I shoot 4 times a week off a 50lb recurve. Was showing folk the tab I'm using at a shoot at the weekend and as such all were impressed with the way the foam has stood upto the punishment.
I'm trying to gather evidence from around the World when there is an issue concerning longevity, but as yet there doesn't seem to be any major problems other than one customer in Australia was destroying a tab face every week. We never did get to the botttom of that problem.

Am using Halo at the moment, but will be switching to angel majesty soon (my order just arrived (: hee) The lifespan is not that bad really. Even when there is almost a hole in the face, I can still continue using it for some time. But I'd usually swap it out once it reaches the "almost has a hole" state. It only seems short when compared to that of a leather. But then again, for the price compared to leather, it doesn't really matter much. I don't really need to show people my tab. The moment they see a red facing, they start asking

Just to clarify - angel majesty is my preferred material. I have over several discussions with the Oberon maestro established that one may not exactly compliment the other. Having said that the benefits are still there if you are prepared to change the face a little more regularly - no big deal. The only problem I had was because I didn't appreciate the difference the change in the thickness of the material would make.

Mine has lasted something between 3 and 6 months, shooting around 1200 to 1600 arrows/month and two finger tabs being used more or less the same amount of shots. I do not know what is the serving of the strings I have used so far (Stringflex Fast Flight and 8125). Now I have made my string and the serving is BCY #62 (not XS); let's see how long it will last.

Elder.

I think it has to do with the serving.. Majasty Serving does the job well (:

I think that the type of loose you have makes a difference.
The middle section on my tab wears incredibly quickly (56# and cheap soft centre serving).

Hey ho, nevermind,

Kae.
