Compound or new limbs?

A tricky one this. My bonus is just about to hit the bank and before 'er indoors allocates it all to 'projects' I though I might get in there and commit spend to something that _I_ want And she generally approves of my archery, so it won't be a big battle

Now I've had a bit of a long standing desire for some border limbs, and I do need to upgrade as I'm currently fully cranked in. But... Would a cheap compound bow give me something to play with? Given my limited budget (c. £500) would I get anything worthwhile on the compound front? Or should I just stick to the to getting some new limbs for my recurve?

Thoughts anyone?

If you only want a compound to play around with, you could get a trade in from a dealer, or second hand privately, and probably a set of Border limbs too.

You could get a compound kit for around that, but you would be looking at a limited second hand market (most new ones are likely £550+) dependant on your draw length etc. Then you've got to factor in the release aid, sight, scope, rest and another set of arrows and you would be looking at quite a tight budget.

However, a nice set of Borders would be good if you need to up the poundage - and with that sort of budget you're looking at a very nice set indeed.

No, pass through that dark curtain the unenlightened call the dark side, and see the bright white light of the truth and the future of archery

Speaking as one who has quite recently splashed out a fairly significant sum on a set of border HexVs:

Get the limbs. They're absolutely awesome. Stable, fast and made to your spec by British craftsmen. What more could you want?

If you do just want some thing to play with and you are not worried about competitions then there is a way to reduce your costs and shoot a compound. Try Limited compound, do that and you won't need a release aid, scope or arrow launcher. A ring and pin sight, Button and flipper rest will save you pounds. An older second hand long axle to axle bow will be cheaper as well.

Oh dear Jebus take the Borders! I have the TXBs and they're so awesome that I have to resist going and buying every other Border limb to see how they shoot.

I also get a pretty lump of wood running through mine. Worth more than the extra few FPS from the TXGs in my opinion. SOOOOO Pretty!
