Bracing Height

Well my KAP Surprise bow arrived yesterday, and it does look very good
value, although I haven't actually shot it yet.

The recommended bracing height is 22.5 - 23.5 inches, but I can't get anwhere
near that without twisting the string far too much.

The bow and string claim to be 68", so am I missing something obvious.

Should I try a shorter string or just ignore the manufacturers recomendations
and adjust the height till it sounds/feels right.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions

RE: Bracing Height

Erm, you do mean 22.5 - 23.5 centimetres, don't you?

A 68" bow usually wants between an 8.5 and 9 inch bracing height, I've always found about middle is good...

RE: Bracing Height

I had a Kap Suprise bow that I used for training - I had to put about 40 - 50#twists in it to get it sounding right and grouping well.

RE: Bracing Height

Thanks radsbow.

Did the measured bracing height end up within their recomended range?

I was just abit concerned about putting so many twists in the string.

BTW, I see you got a decent price for that bow.
Mine will hopefully be going the same way in 6 month or so.

RE: Bracing Height

LizardEye - I had no manual with the bow, so used the same recomedation as I had for my Exfeel riser - which was between 21.5 - 23.5 cm for medium limbs -#I think it ended up at the top end, at about 23cm - then it sounded great and grouped v-well.</p>

It would not be too concerned about putting 40 twists in the Dacron string provided. Later when maybe you make your own strings, then you can be more concerned. I now make my own and only put about 10 or so twists in. However I did have FastFlight string purchased from#a shop and put 40 twists in that and that worked great as well.</p>

Hope I've been of some help.</p>

RE: Bracing Height

I remember playing this game with one of these, as I recall the KAP Surprise riser is 24" and hence when you get limbs for 68" you actually get a 67" bow or thereabouts. So standard 68" strings are a touch long. I made up a string 1/2" shorter than normal for one I was setting up.

RE: Bracing Height

I've given up trying to twist a 68" string to make it short enough and have used a 66" string instead.
It's a touch too short but I'm hoping it will stretch enough.
A bit stupid of KAP to make a bow that doesn't take standard strings, but I suppose
I've learned a bit in the process.

A possibly stupid question though - rather than twisting the string to shorten it, could
I not just put in a knot at each end, near the serving.

If there is a really good reason why this wouldn't work ( and I'm sure there is)
could someone enlighten me.
