| Scaling Down Target Sizes I can get 15 yards in my well screened and protected back garden. What size target would give me the same sight picture at 15 yards as a full face target at 100 yds. What would be the diametre of the gold? I hope one of you wonderful people out there can help.

| Hi Slowhand, I know someone posted a link to just the thing you are looking for. I thought I had saved it but can't find it at present. I know it is around somewhere; and on the forum. I'll have a search. A quick calculation says 3/20 of the 100y gold will look about the same. 36m.m. by my reckoning. Sub-Yardage Spot Targets Does this help? | Don't forget to put your target up higher if you want the feel to be as close as can be. To give you an indication I ran it through TAP (the archery program): For my Merlin XT compound @ 54 lbs it needs to be 40 inches higher than usual and for my brothers Elite recurve @ 43 lbs 80 inches. | Thanks very much everyone! I tried it yesterday (going by what looked 'right' my gold was 34mm, very close to Geof's 36mm). It worked very well and going by where the centre of the arrows impacted my 'scores' were not too far off what I usually get at 100 yards. You can get six scaled down targets (with only one ring of the blue showing) on a sheet of A4 paper. I'm going to get 20 colour copies which should keep me going for a while!

| What it doesn't scale down though, is the diameter of your arrow! A 36mm gold will only allow so many arrows in it, surely? I have exactly the same setup as you in my garden and can get 14 yards to the boss, and I use a Vegas 3-spot target. (saves wear on the centre of the boss too) Someone told me that arrows dont even start to deviate from their course until they're about 15 yards out of the bow anyway, so rather than mess about with scaling targets or scores down, I just count linecutters as the LOWER value rather than the higher value. The difference that that makes should be about right to cover the extra 5 yards an arrow has to travel for a Vegas or Portsmouth round. As there is no distance change for these rounds, it gives me a rough idea of where I should be. I haven't done a York yet though! ![]()

| At 15 yards neither the wind not gravity will have begun to have any serious effect on the flight of your arrows. It may also be that your fletchings have not yet fully corrected the flight of the arrow. Instead of having mini targets to shoot at why not use the back of a target face and put a matrix of 1cm round dots on it? Apart from this of itself being a most interesting pasttime your aim, quite literally, would be to nock the spots off your target. Your boss would also wear out evenly (assuming a modicum of accuracy). ![]() |

| I forgot to add: To save faffing about drawing circles on your PC, you can also get a downloadable PDF from the Mayflower Archers site, in the Resources section, under "target faces for the garage" which is an A4 sheet with 6 target faces. And if you have access to one, run it through the colour copier at the office, and print it out on A3! hehe!

| [quote=Ffish;154969]What it doesn't scale down though, is the diameter of your arrow! A 36mm gold will only allow so many arrows in it, surely? Thats why I said you have to go by where the centre of the arrow impacts the target, it's quite easy to call a 10 or a 9 (and on the odd ocassion an 8 or 7!) Oh, and I only shoot 1 arrow at a time on each mini target, this saves damage to the arrows. With six targets on an A4 sheet you can shoot full 'ends' without having to change your position. You can also move the A4 sheet around the boss to prevent damage to one area of the boss. Give it a go, it's good fun and a real challenge. I've found so far that it's just as hard to score a ten on the mini target as the real thing. The only thing you can't really duplicate is (as someone mentioned) the angle you're shooting at. This is something I will certainly be experimenting with during the comming indoor season.
