The English Monsoon

Yep, the monsoon season continues, we've just set out Cleve for 720 & Fita star and, how shall I put it, it's a little wet out there. The entrance to the field required a tractor (which we ain't got), so instead we had to carry all the targets, stands etc 500 yds from the carpark. Sorry guys 'n gals, anyone coming won't be allowed to park on the field (not that they'd get more than 10 yds).

If I had a remote controlled boat I'd bring it along. What sort of conditions have others endured this rainy season?

Still, a big public thanks to all the members who turned up and did all the work, and a big telling off the those who couldn't be bothered and left it to us. Methinks a sense of humour will be needed for the next couple of days.

Thank the Lord for chinese takeways and beer!

Good luck to all, shooting or not, who are water bound.

I noticed that now the flooding has affected the Home Counties, the BBC News has given an instantly more sympathetic slant to the reporting. No "built on flood plains" snide comments, lots of soft interviews with middle class people who have lost furniture, no "granny was too stupid to buy insurance" reporting. While I live in London, I defn do not like the BBC News southern bias.

So anyone have a report of how things went today at Cleve? It looked to be very little breeze but a lot of rain later in the day!

Turned out nice and sunny, mud gradually drying out towards the end of the day to give a more glastonbury-without-the-music than battle-of-the-somme type effect. Got a bit windy for 50m and 30m, but not so bad. Naomi (I dunno if I spelt that right) shot something like 1328.

Antje and I did not set the world alight with our brilliance, and it took us three+ hours to get back to Oxford, M4 being closed because of a crash.

In other news, Botley road is closed and people are being evacuated due to the anticipated "surge" on the Isis. Antje is looking for her wellies, although I think she'd be better advised to start work on a modest ark.

The Above And Boynd The Call Of Duty award goes to Neil Dowsett and a club-mate who took 18 hours to get from Grantham to Bristol, including (I think) 8 hours completely stationary on the M5 car park at Worcester.

I am a member of Cleve, as although I don't live in Bristol and don't shoot for them, my partner's not too far away. But sorry due to flooding the 2-hour drive turned into a 4-hour one and I didn't make it in time to help. Keith (judge), took 7 hours from Portsmouth as he did get stuck on the A34 . You were all too efficient in packing away. Same on the way back - I was home at 1:30am.

A report, hmmm...
Mud, mud, mud.

Otherwise - it's a bit embarrassing really. It was still on sat and I qualified first with a OK FITA 70m (which was a pb cos FITA 70m's aren't my strong point). However, got knocked out pretty quickly as you would expect when you shoot 93 in the 1/8. Didn't stay after that.

The Sun I did pretty well, it was nice weather until 50m but then managed to turn very windy by 30m (fortunately from behind). I was 1st,1278, wasn't bad in the conditions, it wasn't perfect. Not up to your standards of course Grant but well within my goals...
2nd place, might have been Jonathan Manning, about the 1250 mark? Ian McGibbon 3rd with 1242. Julian piper also around that level. Women's recurve dominated by Naomi.

I'm to forget, or rather learn from, 'that' dozen and concentrate on the positives. And cleaning off the mud.

p.s. I am not Mr Cough this wouldn't be the first time I've been called so but I'm sure Denise got it right last year!
