| you could try running a highest % improvement on first score. That was you avoid the handicap improvers schemes |

Archers want to be the best. They wouldnt compete otherwise. To give out prizes on any other basis than to the best on the day is condescending and patronising to the "not so good but improving" archer. It is only the top few who win everything that find that winning all the time becomes embarrassing. This is why handicap shoots are so few far between and poorly supported by archers and organisers. |

Result : - Everyone improves (hopefully) I like the idea that GingerGeneCarrier had of 'Highest % improvement on first score' Thanks for that idea. ![]() Also a fellow Archer contacted me to say that one club(he has no idea who) give out medals if you beat say 500 then you got another one if 525 or whatever. Anyone know anything about this??? Keep the info coming Folks |

| A thought for you on the 'best improvers' side -we started a competition which is now in its third year (it can't actually happen in the first year!) and has proved popular and interesting for us. We very rarely shoot target but this should not make the formula unworkable for target disciplines. We simply compare the average of each archers 10 best scores within the calendar year and measure the percentage improvement year on year - highest percentage improvement wins. Your top archers tend to 'fall out of the top' because it becomes exceptionally difficult to improve at a constant high rate once a certain standard is reached, but everyone else in the pack has a good chance. It also produces an incentive to support enough shoots, as you have to register 10 scores in two consecutive years to qualify. Currently, out of 18 members, we have 9 already qualified (having shot 10shoots last year and 10 already this year), 2 who can qualify by completing their 10 shoots this year, 4 have already achieved positive improvements (obviously this improves as the year goes on) with 2 scores in the 40% range and 2.5% of each other leading.

| To be honest the handicap tables are there to do this.(level the playing field) You Could do a fun shoot where anyone under a certain score(for example 250) for a portsmouth shoots on a full size face then the next band(350-250) shoots an 80cm face & the next band (500-350) shoots a standard portsmouth face 500 + use a fita 18 face(40cm) Then they shoot a standard portsmouth & highest score wins. But the scores wouldn't be admissable for handicaps or rankings etc.

| How about a tassel competition. We run one through the winter months for club members where we get together one Saturday evening per month and shoot and have cake. Archers are shooting against their own best scores to progress through the different colours. We use a 5 spot face for seniors scoring 5 and 4 only. And a single spot for juniors and longbow which scores 5,4,3,2,1 We also have a 10yd distance for little ones and beginners. As archers are only realy shooting against themselves it is easy to see improvement over the months without feeling they are competing against each other. However there is always some friendly competition between archers in the same class. For actual competition we run the Boston indoor series with PAA/18m/25m/Portsmouth and Worcester rounds - all open competition, no handicap but split into the various classes of bow, seniors and juniors, team and husband/wife. We award medals for each round and overall trophies for the series. I agree with Grimsby_archer in that competition is important and archers want to win - speaking as an archer who usually comes in the bottom 3, it gives me something to work towards ........... one day !!!!

| We run a club handicap shoot indoors. The member who has the best improvement in their handicap over the month (by shooting a specific round) gets the prize - which usually precludes the best archers, but hey - they compete externally anyway. We had one month where it was a dead heat, so we did a one-arrow shoot off in front of the club - everyone loved it and it's just a bit of fun. The handicap tables are easy to use, so no worries there.
