officially a webmaster now !

many moons ago not long after i joined my club i declared i would be happy to revamp our simple little (it was a single page) website

well i eventually got round to having a crack at it and today our new site goes live !

not being any kind of codehead (yes - even lowly .html scares me ! ) i found a decent open-source template and went from there concentrating on content and (hopefully) ease of finding your way around (although habitual tinkerer that i am i couldnt resist hamfistedly hacking in the odd little bit of javascript i found floating around the net)

the results are here - OOBAC - home - please have a look around and let me know what you HONESTLY think - what have i forgotten ? / what could be tweaked ? / whats good ? / etc - bearing in mind some bits are not yet populated fully (but these are flagged up)

since im primarily a linux / firefox user at the minute ive only had limited internet explorer testing so if youre an IE user your feedback is even more welcome

A VAST improvement Rob. Well Done.

F.Y.I.
I use IE 7 and it may be my settings but the text was very small, and some of the headers occasionally overlapped the text. Could you use a colour other than grey for the text?

We too should have a new site soon if I am to believe what I am told.

Good job! Easy to navigate and the colour scheme makes it clear / easy to read. No probs using IE7 for me.

Nice layout, simple, clear and informative.

The "members only" login kept me busy for minutes before I cracked the password.

The only (there had to be an "only" didnt there) thing that confused me (person of little brain) was the horizontal menu appeared to lose the "home" item when I went into any of the sub pages, so I couldnt get back to the home after clicking "club"

Keep up the good work

Overall really good stuff.

More content on your homepage though, it's very bare at the moment.

Don't put empty pages up with "Page Under Construction" if it's not finished then people don't need to know, just leave it out.

The members section is easy to hack as you're allowing the contents of the folder to be viewed and don't have a default document.

ie. Index of /members

I'd rename memberslogin.html to index.html to avoid that.

The Javascript prompt also didn't work in my IE7.

I also found the repetition of the initial menu confusing.

Perhaps it only needs to be at the top and the missing hompage content could point people in the right direction as well.

eg.

"High welcome to Old Oundle Bowmen. Here you can find out information about our club and catch up on all the latest news.

For those of you new to archery, you may find our resources section full of useful information about the sport of archery. We also run Beginners Courses and would love archers both new and old to join us."

If you link the bold words to the relevant pages then you've got a nice chunk of useful content for the homepage. Eyetracking studies have show that people follow links in body text like this before even looking at a menu.

But like I say, good job, especially considering your experience! I've been doing this since '95 so it's easy for me to pick holes, but your first result is a damn site better than mine was 12 years ago!

One final thing. Don't claime to have valid XHTML when you haven't. I guess the template was valid when you downloaded it, but the homepage for example has 66 errors when you click on the validation link.

Just looking through them there's a lot of missing end tags, probably the fault of your editor. There's also a hell of a lot of nested font and small tags lying about, sometimes they are even empty. Also a fault of whatever you are editing in not cleaning up after itself. We really don't use font tags at all anymore, try to avoid them. You'll thank yourself once you've learned to use CSS instead.

So good going, carry on learning and you'll be turning out the next site in half the time and making it twice as good!

If I've been too harsh tell me to sod off!

I
