Wanting to start archery

Hi, I live in teddington, near kingston/richmond (London, England) and would like to start up archery. Can anyone who has any information as to where and how I could do this help me?
Regards,
Ross

There's Greenwood Osterley Archers near Osterley Park.

Greenwood Osterly Archers

There's also the Royal Richmond Archery Club

Royal Richmond Archery Club

Both of these are GNAS affiliated.

We have several members of each club here on the forum.

If you speak to

Clickerati
Noobarcher
Lewney
PorlyP

These are all members of RRAC

and if I recall correctly, Ffish is a member at Greenwood Osterley.

They should be able to point you in the right direction

you will need to take a beginners course in archery, and undertake 6 hours of supervised shooting, before you will be able to join most clubs. There are three ways I know of doing this, others may add to it later.

Many clubs run beginners courses, and you don't need to be a member to take part. They hope that they will join them when you have finished the course. Budget anythng between £30 to £50 for the course. Most clubs have kit that you can use during the course, and often after as well once you join.

Some sport centres run archery courses. again about the same cost, and again kit you can use, but you will start with diffrent kit once the course is finished and you join a club.

Many archery shops run beginners courses. Probablu a bit more for the course, again the kit is available for use. They hope you will buy your kit from them.

Most shops also offer one to one tuition but his is usually £25 per hour up. There are also some independent coachs who offer a simaler service, but as far as I know they're more set up for improvers than newbies.

Once you'ce completed a beginers course most archery clubs will welcome you with open arms, and details of those that are local to you have been given above.

Good luck, but be careful, the bug can bit deep!

All the above is good advice - let me add one more thing...

DON'T buy anything until you have joined a club, done the beginner's course and preferably have shot regularly for a few months after that. Archery uses muscles that don't normally get much of a workout, and you will find that the draw weight (how much effort it takes to pull the string back) and the draw length (how far you pull it back and therefore the length of arrow you need) will increase quite quickly over the first few months. Any kit bought before these parameters have settled will become obsolete faster than a politician's promise...

I know the Richmond archers will help you out, AND teach you the finer points of synchronised cake eating too !!

Hand your wallet and cards over to a responsible person for safekeeping if you wish to take up archery, the bug can bite, and the never ending stream of new tackle coming out will have you screaming for more !!!

Then there is the summer clothing, the winter clothing, bags to carry the kit, shooting line tent ................

As an angler, we have the phrase "Tackle Tart", I wonder if this may apply to archers too ?

Why didn't someone tell me before I started a year ago. I'm now one year older and my wallets a lot thinner these days. But, hey, it's FUN!
