How much does your club do???

Hey all,

Was just wandering how much your club does or doesn't do in the way of internal leagues/competitions?

Our club presently doesn't do much apart from the usual postal leagues and open tournaments etc. I was thinking of suggesting that we should run an internal league for this summer to help keep everyone 'match fit'.

If your club does run an internal league or competition do you run a handicap system of some sort to even things up between the classess.

I'd be interested to hear any comment you may have on internal leagues including ideas on how best to run them,

thanks,

We run the usual handicap shoots (1 per month), postal league shoots (Portsmaouth and Frostbite) in winter, Club Champs (indoor and outdoor), Presidents shoot (where all bow types are handicapped together based on the Bowman score for each bow type) and we also run, during the summer months, a Grand Prix.

The Grand Prix is so called because of the scoring (winner gets 10 points, second 8 points, next 6, 5,4,3,2,1). At the end of the year prizes are given for the first 3 archers in each section.

With this variety of shoots everyone has a chance to win something...the handicaps are usually won by improving archers and the Grand Prix by the experienced ones.

We run a ladder within our club, at the start of the season all the archers taking part in the ladder are out on the wall in a random order and challenges (12 arrow passes) are shot to determine places on the ladder. You can challenge anyone upto 3 places above you, a win results in you taking their place, a loss leaves you where you are and unable to challenge for a week.

In addition to club rankings

We run an achievement scheme open only to our novices. At distances from 20M in 10M increments up to 50M (or is it 60) the challenge is to score 252+ from 3doz arrows. Those who achieve the target are given a 252 badge - each a different colour.

This has several benefits, it gets them used to friendly competition, allows them to see real progression in their ability, gives them confidence - insofar as they know they can do it at 30....so 40 won't be too much of a stretch. The awarded badges are given out the week after the score was achieved.

It's an improvement from when I was a novice (the first time), when I did my beginners course ( never did get a certificate) and then was left to my own devices....never did do a scored round after that, I have never shot further than 30M because I didn't think I was capable.

We also have a Portsmouth & Frostbite award scheme which is open to all club members. Based on scores (Portsmouth>500 and Frostbite >300) badges are awarded. These, I understand are distributed at the Club dinner/bun fight.

I have no idea exactly how the club ladder/league works as I've never competed in it...It may simply be based upon handicap.

That lot definately makes my club look a bit boring, do you run the handicap system according to the (is it fita or gnas) handbook. I was shown the handbook a while ago and didn't really understand how the handicap system works.

I'll have to suggest some stuff at a meeting and see what response i get.

Yeah, its at 20yrds with some allowance between different styles. (compound vs recurve, the compound shoots a 3 spot, recurve shoots a 60cm; barebow vs recurve, barebow shoots 60cm, recurve shoots 40cm: that kinda thing.)

But theres no reason you couldn't run it over various distances, we barely make 20yrds in our range which is why we don't.

Our club (savile Bowmen) run the BA postal leagues Portsmouth and Frostbite in the winter, plus the Selby postal in the summer, and also alongside we run a handicap based grand prix, over the winter a nominated round is shot monthly (all indoor rounds) then current and updated handicaps are applied to give the results, the twist is that the top ten archers get points 10 for first through to 1 for 10th place 5 scores (out of 6 ) count towards the result with a trophy and archery voucher for the winner.

We also run a similar scheme in the summer.

Additionallly we also run a junior scheme which is similar to JAWS, and the usual indoor and outdoor handicap improvement.
