| Boss hire We have been asked to quote for hiring out 8 "good quality bosses" and stands to a local club for their indoor shoot. Portsmouth rounds will be shot over 2 days in 5 sessions, by both recurve and compound archers ranging in ability from county champions to club archers. We have a hire charge in mind but would be interested to know if others do this sort of thing and what is charged. There is no possibility of a reciprocal arrangement to avoid money exchanging hands. Cost of transport is a separate issue. Thanks in advance for any input. DB

| Many thanks for your very prompt replies. Are these charges of £10/day for indoors or outdoors. If indoors, how many sessions ? Our bosses are straw btw.

I suppose it also depends on how you rotate your stock of bosses and will they only be hire stock. We buy new ones for the start of the indoor series season, these are then used outdoor for tournaments then outdoor for club then indoor for club and finally they are retired. Obviously this has to take account of damage to individual bosses so some do jump from indoor to club.

| Ours are outdoors only. If this was for indoors, and there was more than 2 sessions, you might want to charge more for increased wear and tear. That probably depends on whether this is going to be a regular occurrence or just a one off. If one off, not going to matter much, but otherwise you really do need to think about how soon would you need to replace them. A good idea (Lasswade do this) is to ask that the bosses be rotated 90 degrees after each session, this spreads the wear round the boss. We keep our competition bosses separate, when they wear we use them for club shooting. |

| We found that a straw boss with 4 good archers shooting at it wont last more than 4 double portsmouth rounds (experience of hosting county indoor championships) so working on £100 to replace a boss, you could justify £25 per boss. If the good archers are shooting 3 spot, the wear is reduced, likewise if the archers are longbows or just plain rubbish shots, less wear means the bosses last longer. Certainly the few shillings that my county used to pay didnt come near. I think the rates were increased at the last agm. I must check as the champs is soon and I'll have to bill them.
