Bag packing!

Here's a shining illustration of how well our sport is funded. Eggs on top, please.

Archers target shoppers in fundraising bid - Edinburgh Evening News

A TOP archery team has been bag-packing at their local supermarket to raise money to take them to the World Field Archery Championships next month.
Gilmerton's Drumfield Archers, who took six gold and two silver medals at the European Championships in 2005, are desperately short of £10,000 they need to take them to Namibia on April 2.

They currently have less than half the amount needed with less than three weeks to go, meaning club members may have to fork out for the remaining money to be in with a chance of competing.

Archer William Marr asked: "How often do you see championship-winning athletes packing bags in supermarkets to follow their dreams?

"Most other sports have big sponsors but we're having to do it all on our on our own. We have one junior member who is 12, but the rest of the guys are in their 30s and mid-40s."

The team have already been packing bags at Asda and will be out in force again at Morrisons on Gilmerton Road this weekend.

True dedication to the Sport and good luck, both in raising funds and at the tournament.

I just wonder how many Top athletes in other, better funded Sports would show similar dedication or would they just take their ball home?

Why is everyone so surprised about this? We are a niche sport riven by petty bureaucratic politics governed from a plethora of organizations claiming to be the governing body that show no sign of wanting to co-operate or combine for the good of the sport.

Until such time as there is
1) A single governing body &
2) An audience for the events
Why would any company or organization sponsor us?

How many of you out there have to belong to multiple governing bodies so that you can have the "right" insurance when you go to an open shoot?

This is an inclusive sport being held back by its governing bodies. If I were a sponsor I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole.

And by the way, packing a few shopping bags to go a Namibia to play with your bow and arrow.............not exactly a hardship is it?

If I have annoyed anyone who is part of GNAS, NFAS, SFAA, etc., etc......GOOD!

I shall now dismount my high horse and prepare for the incoming wrath.

Oh, come on. This is clearly a publicity stunt rather than a way to raise funds.
I can think of lots of ways that would raise much more cash than packing bags in a supermarket.

How many are going the it costs £10,000 to go to NAMIBIA?
I can only assume that the bag packing is to get this sort of publicity in the hope of bigger donations but where is the paypal donations address or address to send my donation cheque to?
I hope it works and wish these guys the best of luck

My son has been bag packing so that he can go to Malta with the scouts for a week in the summer. It is actually quite lucrative but more of the order of £300 to be raised each. There's about 20 going so £6000 and Namibia is a lot further away. The idea is that everyone has the costs discounted by their share of money raised at each funding event. SO trhe more they turn up and do then the less it costs me - whoopie - the promise was if they do all the events it should be free (and we get our airfare deposit back). A way of funding everyone regardless of parental income.

Airfare to Namibia is likely to be around £600 at a guess - that was what it was to go to Jo'burg three years ago - if there is 6 thats 3600 pounds plus accommodation and food for at least a week. It adds up quickly.

Why do these events cost so much?
Edinbugh: "Officials say hosting the event would cost the city council about £95,000 – around one-third of the total £285,000 bill "
As already mentioned, Dover world cup approx £1/2 million.
We put on a double fita star annually. Event turnover approx £2000 and we make a small profit out of that. Even if we had to accommodate the competitors in top hotels for days and give them free entry you would get change out of £10,000. Add in my personal fees and expenses and still theres change out of £50,000.
Is this like the olympics where £1/4 million goes on gifts and trips for the FITA officials to encourage them to give you the event?

The Edinburgh quote continues: "but estimate it could boost the Capital's economy by £1 million"
How? Are 10,000 archery hungry spectators going to decend on Edinburgh and have a spend-fest?
Sorry for dragging this thread a little off topic
