Not exactly an accurate picture of the sport of archery but one that did proliferate, and it was probably the fact recurve dominated in uni that meant I took up recurve too.
My old club, Silvertree archers was the same, maybe due to the influence that a lot the of the first archers in the UK to shoot compound were members, but it became a compound/primitive club, with a few re-curvers in the middle. Probably 50/10/40 split. I fact, at some events, like national champs, we struggled to get enough re-curvers to enter club teams where there had to be different styles in the mix.

And yet there are apparently lots of us about!!
In my field club we can count the number of dedicated recurvers/barebow on one hand and then minus that from the overall membership to get the number of compounds.

As most beginners come into archery via the recurve route I would guess that the sale of beginners recurve bows is high with very few beginners choosing to buy compound equipment. This would also explain why there is a heavier weighting of recurve archers by % at club level tournaments.
This doesnt account for the 80% of beginners who buy equipment (as you say, usually recurve) and dont see the year out.
Perhaps someone could trawl tournament results published on the internet by those clubs who publish them. That would give a good nationwide sample of active archers. Granted it wouldnt include the "social and casual" archers, but who cares about them anyway?

I have just done the target list for Sundays Lincs County shoot and the breakdown is as follows:

Recurve - 57%
Compound - 35%
Longbow - 8%

This includes Juniors.

And whilst the numbers who have done that have increased dramatically over the last couple of years you are still looking at being ranked say 100th out of 200 at most in each category.

It is a lot easier to work out where you are when you are in the top 20 or so, you can easily identify if there are one or two missing top archers.
Is that a guesstimate of the numbers involved, or is that actually how many(ish) qualify?

Interestingly (or very sad depending on your viewpoint) Ive just gone through the Lincs county champs (indoor &out) and double fita star for the last few years and get the same figures give or take 3% in each case

That wasn't even a guestimate just a "for example if"...

the actual numbers can be seen on the GNAS website, the ranking lists there are complete. But it does highlight that last year for example only 102 gents recurve completed the required scores for ranking.
