We have had substantial discussions recently on whether coaches should be allowed to profit, but coaches arent the only ones with valuable skills that are often overlooked. Why not pay secretaries and treasurers?
Everyone always expects the earth from us, until the agm and the chairman asks for nominations!
Its not like committee members get any official recognition from the governing body. Coaches, judges and archers all have badges they can earn (county, regional, 1st class, bowman etc) but secretaries get the order of "where's my gnas card?"
New poll anyone>?

We tried a voucher scheme last year. £5 discount on membership per half day help given with a max of 4 vouchers & then back to goodwill.

Had 4 helpers that had never done so before, did a 1/2 day, got a voucher & never saw them again (they were only seen shooting once or twice in the year).

The usual helpers declined the vouchers but if added up, most would of got free membership for the year & three of us would of had enough for free membership for 15-20 years.

We droped it this year because we've built up a stronger nucleus.

DO NOT CHARGE YOUR MEMBERS TO GET OUT OF WORKING BEES. This does not work!
You must change the culture and expectation on your membership and make them feel like they want to help the club.
I would LOVE to pay $50 to never work at the club again. However all I'll have is a crap club then.
Our club had the same problem, untill we encouraged people to attend in a positive fashion and created a culture of it. Now we get 40-50 turn up and have everything done in a few hours. We provide lunch and then everyone gets to shoot.
Don't make a working bee an all day affair. Make sure people can shoot afterwards.
Our club does not charge it's members a working bee levy and has no problem getting people, the clubs in my state that do charge it had their attendance DROP.
Also don't bully or shame people who can not or do not attend. This will not make them come and simply make your club a horrible place to be.

It is now written in our constitution that every club member is expected to do something for the club at some point during the year... this can be anything such as work within the club house or at a shoot or with beginners etc

To be fair.. I think everyone at some point does do something for the club, but the idea was to generate more help at competitions as we hold a fair few

After hearing this moan for the last 20 odd years I as membership sec put forward the following idea. We put the membership up to £60 and you get £5 off this until you have done 5 work sundays when you get the full £30 off.
Which means if you do 5 work sundays you get 1/2 price membership.

Out of 115 members we've been getting around 30ish so far this year.
Which is up from about 10. So it seems to be better.

We are a EFAA field archery club, and a 2nd club to many gnas archers, should we stop them being members? Or just let them pay extra for not helping?

ps
Not a dig at gnas members, it's the nfas one's who never turn up and whinge the we don't put the 3ds out often enough!!!!!

As with all clubs I have been in there are 'Club Members' and the 'Members of the Club'

Too many seem to be content to just turn up, however by putting on some lunch at a weekend work party the numbers of workers is growing. Some people also travel a fair distance or work over weekends and so cant always get to a work party, these need to be factored into the numbers.

How do you cope with the people who use the club as a second club?

Not a lot you can do IMHO.
You either only have keen EFAA only members and struggle to pay ground rent, rates, etc. Or you let anyone join and have a health bank balance.
Personly I prefer the latter.
Also you always have the chance to convert them to proper archery in a wood......
