Personally I don't want to shoot more than 1hr from my house or my parents house and I don't want to shoot less that 100yds in a competition. Or even really in practise. So I don't attend the short distance shoots (like windsors) I also don't believe the fuss of filling in a form, paying money etc etc is worth it for a national unless it's with any of the three clubs I'm affiliated with. Even then when I travel to Kestrels for their national tournament there's the option of a double new national!

FWIW I would give them a try, ok so there is not the same challenge as shooting 100 yards but there is a bigger mental challenge of getting as close to a maximum score as you can (this is even the case at the top level with the 70m round & H2H). It's comfortable shooting the longer distances and having a bad day, you can blame the weather and the distance, on shorter rounds there is nowhere to hide.

I try to shoot shorter distances mixed in with the longer ranges after a terrible 30m in a metric 1 last year, I honestly don't find them as fun as pinging 'arras' 100yds.

In fact I'm all for the introduction of the Uber-National/warick/western and the Lancaster round taking us to 120 yds at least!

The SAA region is almost completely dominated by FITAs, Yorks and H to H's. Not complaining, just pointing it out

Our National shoot is in Crowthorne 30mins or so from Reading and we are offering a single or double New national (and all the rest)

Encouraging beginners

I do think regions should try more to encourage beginners - a lot of the shorter tournaments have Nationals, but as add-ons to the York\Hereford - and only allow U\C or 3rd class.

There is a big jump in standard from 72 arrows at 60/50 to a Hereford or York. I always remember my first York, it was a nightmare I got backache picking all of the arrows up.

It would be good to see more archery series events within a region, getting a few clubs to hold the primer events, and then a final event that is based on handicapping from the previous 3 best score out of 5 for example. I do think this would encourage less adventurous archers to shoot more, as they will be shooting with people they know on a regular basis.

Handicaps are very much underutilised at the moment, and a lot of this is to do with trust, but if it is a handicap based on a series some of this mistrust can be removed.

The EMAS Champs has Long National (men), National (ladies) rounds and prizes for handicap ranges. As TO it is a real pain in the neck to administrate.
We have spaces if anyone fancies coming.
