As a leftie I can (almost) never share a scope on the line as the person I'm shooting with is usually right-handed. If they leave their scope on the line when I go up to shoot I just pick it up and place it behind me (inbetween the shooting/waiting lines). They either remember to come up and grab it or it looks very silly when everyone else has cleared the line!!

FITA rules say that a scope may be left on the line when an archer isn't shooting. Being allowed to do it is one thing - whether one should actually do so is quite another. In my opinion it's inconsiderate to the point of rudeness. I have been known to take a step back to locate my footmarker and knock someone's scope over in the process. 'Oh dear, terribly sorry old chap - just wanted to stand in front of the target'. I have had one or two who wished to dispute, but being 6 feet 4 does have certain advantages!

Whats wrong with leaving your scope behind the waiting line and using bino's on the shooting line?

Any FITA shoot I have been too we have decided at the start whether we can share a scope and subsequently leave it on... and check that no-one else on the line has a problem with its position!!

Saves any snide comments or sly footwork

Same approach here.

Just a quick word with my target colleges and any confusion or problems are quickly avoided.

Apart from one archer that asked to share my scope, then proceded to alter the scope height and focus to the point it was unusable for me.
(even after been told to leave it alone)

The scope share quickly stopped for that person. (No names, but a upcoming GB archer)

I find it almost impossible to use a scope (glasses, odd eyes, general incompetence), but I also find having one close to my shooting position is an immense distraction. But I recognise others' rights to plonk one there if they really, really must.

I think most archers really must and would do better if they were a little more prepared to follow groups. It costs me points, not to mention generally makes me grumpy, if I have good groups that are off the middle.

It is much easier to use a scope to locate on a target than binoculars (not to mention you'd need better quality ie more expensive binoculars than scopes to see arrows). I never understand why people are quite happy waiting for their third arrow before checking and moving their site. You don't need to check every time you shoot but that's why the rules say you can have one.

At most FITAs I also still find scopes are swapped and only left on the line whilst collecting, because as mentioned, some may need it set up in a way to make it easier for them.

Less of a time waster on a FITA (at present) because at the long distance you get to shoot all 6, and do the 3-3 shuffle.

I always assumed that the great "scope on the line" argument was about the scope remaining on the line whilst the archer was NOT on the line.

I have never heard of an archer being refused a scope whilst they were shooting. Am I just misreading HHs post, or do I have a limited experience.

For me, the forest of scope tripods behind the equip line has always presented a much greater obstacle than scopes on the line. This is mainly because scopes on the line tend to be put there at the start of shooting and stay in the same place all day. Scopes that have to be removed from the line with the archer tend to get put any where and every where.
