I think the responsibility ultimately has to be on the purchaser. When you buy a pint of milk from the grocers they don't ask you if its actually semi-skimmed you want, or really you should use self raising rather than the plain you've picked up.
The information is out there to make correct and informed decisions, whether that be from books, clubs, courses, coaches or telephone conversations with the retailer. All it takes is a two minute phonecall to ask, I am buying this, is this bit suitable which I am sure all retailers would be happy to answer.
I certainly wouldnt expect a retailer to question my purchase over the internet especially as mentioned previously, they have no way of knowing if it is all for one set-up or person.

Agreed - take computer hardware for instance. The vast majority of internet retailers will state in their terms and conditions that it is the buyer's responsibility to ensure that their purchase is compatible with the other hardware. This won't override distance selling regulations (can't remember the exact details) but as far as I'm aware the retailer isn't under obligation to refund/replace something which has been bought without checking it is compatible* - the fact that most will is another matter.

You do quite often get odd orders with retailers - I for one ordered 15 or so recurve strings about a month ago. I also put my new compound rest on the order. It's not up to the retailer to question every order.

*I'm not a qualified legal practitioner (yet) but as far as I know this is the case

This might be a UK only thing, but you cant be expected to buy under a you bought it, Tough luck trade style.
The distance selling act allows a consumer to return the goods bought within 30 days as long as they have not been produced especially for that order. e.g. arrows cut to size. But this should be made clear when the goods are being sold. Also the goods must be unused as well. (Of course if the goods are faulty you have more rights than that). You will obviously have to cover the postage costs - and I suspect if you return goods a few times to a retailer they will refuse to deal with you again as well.

- If you buy the wrong riser \ limbs combination you would be allowed to return.
- If an arrow rest won't fit your equipment you would be allow to return.
- If the arrows are the wrong spine, tough luck. Plus you won't be able to get the cost of the fletchings, nocks, piles returned either. This is why companies like quicks in their catalogue try to spell out quite clearly 'make sure you specify the length correctly, and even how to measure the length'.

That I did not know - I just thought they would not allow returns if you ordered the wrong thing. Oh well - you learn something new every day.

we have been known to take back custom ordered bows, or remake if the customer was not happy with the draw weight.

You can be rest assured that to custom make a bow is a heck of a work.
But still, we are not just selling a bow, we are selling a service too.
