I was on 2, there were 3 stick slingers on 1 and 2 of us on 2. I think we would all have been happy to shoot as a 5 on 1. There was a compounder on 2 and I never like that, lost too many arrows at the shorter distances when I manage to get them in the middle, then there's the choice between the agony of watching a non LB shooter pull my carefully crafted arrows or trying to pull compound missiles, put all the stick slingers in the naughty corner at one end say I!

Maybe see you at Pilgrim next weekend, fingers crossed for the weather!

I went to a record status Rose award York on Sunday and the judge offered us a vote about half way through the first distance and then called it off "on safety grounds" at lunch.

Fair enough there was a good steady wind blowing and some of the gusts were a bit stiff, but I have shot in worse. Yeah the scores were going to be well down, but same for everyone.

We longbowers were perfectly happy and prepared to finish the round, the recurvers seemed OK (and surely the clicker keeps the arrow on the rest anyway?). But there was a problem with one of the compounds. Not sure quite what happened, but I think the arrow may have blown off the launcher, leading to a dry loose, or near enough, and a problem with the bow.

Perhaps the judge might have sent all the compounders home? (If she felt they were particularly at risk?) Or did she only have two options available, ie continue or call off? Please note I am not asking anyone who was not there to second guess the decision taken, just asking what possible choices there were.

I had had a 50 mile trip to get there wasted, and other longbowers had travelled further, so we went off in a bit of a huff, as we would happily have finished the shoot.

as far as i was aware if it is record status and there are archers who want to shoot then the judges have to abide by there decision........ or not as the case maybe.

This is not true... the judges & TO are responsible for everyone's safety - it's their call!

you might well be right but i have been at a record status shoot and the rain was coming down quite hard but a few archers were shooting well and wanted to continue so the shoot carried on instead of being abandoned

I have been at 3 shoots where they have been called off... regardless of what the archers said! At 2 of them I was well on for MB... so you can imagine I voiced my opinions loudly!! The 1st time it happened about 5 ladies were on for MB and certainly did not want to stop!

The judge's & TO's word is fiinal..

Tracey.... ... I believe at one time the final word used to be in the hands of the Lady / Lord P. Probably not under FITA though!...

I believe you are correct (dunno about the FITA bit)... but it is generally expected that the Lady / Lord P isn't actually consulted these days. We did have this discussion some time back but I just cant remember what the final statement was!!

The only time I ever experienced a tournament being abandoned was at a Fita Star. The wind was blowing over the bosses faster than they could be put back up; despite having several ropes and pegs to hold them. I can't remember the exact wording of the announcement but I feel it was along the lines of the cost of damaged arrows and the inability to keep up with the demolition of the targets.

The decision to cancel a shoot is the domain of the judge in consultation with the tournament organiser. The opinion of the archers may be asked but as their would be disagreements it is best to leave it to the officials. The Lady paramount was, in the past, the final arbiter in matters regarding scoring etc. however, this honour was taken away several years ago. I do not remember whether the position was consulted on whether to cancel a shoot or not. I myself have cancelled 2 shoots but, have ensured that a proper round, albeit shorter, was shot in both instances to enable classifications to be gained.

Now that's what I would call safety grounds. Sunday's conditions were nowhere near that.

We weren't even offered the option of converting the round to a (New/Long) National after the first 4 dozen.
