Should clubs encourage members and rising stars?

Nirvana may be but if your club was in and idyllic situation, say, all the equipment and facilities it needed – new and excellent beginners take down risers, a huge indoor shooting facility, and large field. Add in a couple of woods for field shooting, equipment room for bow/arrow tuning, an obscene bank balance and all this available 24hrs a day. Basically nothing more that could reasonably be bought. Oh and a healthy membership.

If that sort of scenario existed at your club but they moaned that few people shot either club events or open tournaments do you think that they should do more to encourage archers and possibly give more financial support to those ‘promising’ ones?

I understand that there would have to be written guidelines so that the situation could not be abused.

I wondered what other clubs do both to encourage archers to club events and to assist the better ones? All comments appreciated.

Our club has a grant where we contribute a substantial amount to archers who are travelling overseas for World events. The condition is that they must have been part of a selection process and made a team.
We have now contributed fund to 2 archers for 3 events and have 2 more likely to apply for the world juniors this year.

Our club is not obsene in cash, however the contribution these excelling members make to the club through their abilities is as important as those who mow the lawns, run the shoots and work in the canteen.

Free food for the 9 am breakfast frostbite (once a year) Had a free sherry, lots of cheese at another club shoot, I think it was against another club, so hospitality. There is an interclub darts match with sandwiches coming up. But no coaching or grants yet.

Hi Marcus.

Thanks for your comments.

I guess I was really thinking of those on the next tier down rather than those representing their country and not necessarily to the tune of thousands of pounds/bucks but some sort of assistance.

I don’t know how rich archery is as a sport in Australia but in the UK there are many clubs without their own grounds sharing with other sports and restricted upon when they can shoot. The scenario I depict is what many clubs aspire too – so I was thinking when you have that, what next? (If we exclude the naked dancing girls)

Why should a club be so selective? If a troupe of naked dancing girls turned up at mine and weren't alllowed to join, I should be very upset!
