Question Pope-Young Round

We are having a fun shoot as an outdoor season starter, and it was suggested that we do a Pope-Young round amongst others. We are not 100% sure what a PY round is, there are several opinions.

Any help welcome!

I remember the Pope Young round although I have never seen one being shot. I believe that Redruth Archers used to put one on for longbow. If I remember rightly it consists of a number of targets placed at different distances. On the shooting line there are a number of different shooting positions. The round basically consists of shooting from each of the different shooting positions 1 arrow at each target. Each end is shot in a very limited time, making speed shooting the order of the day. Because of the different shooting positions, the distances are all different each end. I used to have a diagram of the layout, if I can find it I will make it available. On the other hand, maybe by contacting Redruth Archers, they can help you.

Hi Tuck,

I am sorry, had no luck finding the diagram for the layout. But I am right, Redruth is putting a Pope Young round on this year on April 23. You can find the Devon & Cornwall Calender here: http://www.dcas.org.uk/ sorry, but they don't allow you to link direct to the calender! The tournament organiser and his contact number is listed there.

I might be able to get another diagram by another means if you can't get hold of Redruth Archers!

Hi Everyone,

I have managed to get hold of the details of the Pope-Young round. I have posted it as a picture, but if anyone wants a better version, pm me your email address and I'll send you the 33kb pdf!

So if I get this right, you get arrows crossing in flight?

Sponge.

Well, I've never seen one being shot, but yes you are correct if the shooting is not being controlled in such a way that only one shooting position shoots at any one time. After all, you only have 45 seconds to shoot all 6 targets so it wouldn't hurt to have position 1 shoot, then position 2 etc.
