| How to blog your way into the Olympics I stumbled across this story on the BBC news website: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/funn...me/4850776.stm Following a drunken night out a guy called Jonathan Phillips has decided that he's going to compete in the 2012 Olympics even though he is of "limited sporting talent". The deal is that he is trying to find a small country that will give him citizenship and let him compete in the Olympics as part of their national squad. He has yet to decide on a sport, but Archery is on the shortlist. Ultimately his aim is to be at the 2012 Olympics and raise £1m for charity. His blog is here: http://2012olympiccompetitor.co.uk/ Good luck to him I say! |

| That's a fantastic idea! ![]() I used to think about trying to compete for a small country (albeit one I had some relation to and not just one chosen because of it's lack of compettitors )~Jenny~

| I've sometimes wondered how the system works when faced with (for example) dual nationality.... Unfortunately, my "other" country is Italy, so I'd be even less likely to qualify for a team there... |

| See http://www.archery.org/clients/fita/...8?OpenDocument Minimum Olympic standard for men is 1200 FITA or 600 70m round. BUT! Places are allocated to countries based on following: 1- Host nation gets 3 places per gender 2- Top 8 teams in last World Champs before Olympics get 3 places Top 19 indiviudals in World Champs (excluding any that qualified in team) 3- 15 places shared out between indiviudals at continental tournaments e.g. European champs. 4 - remaining 3 places by invitaion from the Tripartite Commission??? Maximum 3 places per country per gender. So he's still going to have to be pretty good to get in the Olympics even if he goes with a small country! |
