At my first York shoot, I was standing by my bow waiting to collect when something whacked me on the back of my leg, quite hard. I turned around and there was a tab lying there. Some bloke annoyed with his shooting had come off the line and thrown his tab on the ground, and it bounced up and hit me. He walked over in a right temper, picked up his tab and walked off. Didn't even look at me, let alone apologise.

I had the last laugh. I only shot in the mid 700s or so, it being my first York. Still beat him.

From what i saw on sunday, he seemed to know his stuff, he was dealing with another problem at the other end of the line and so missed the phone incident. I didnt arrive till after the competition started (I was only watching)so i have no idea if he reminded people to switch them off at the start.

P.A.

There is a table of Commandments for the courteous archer somewhere or other - I guess most of us have seen it from time to time.

The most basic rule is - use your common sense! If someone's mobile ringing when you are just about to release would put you off - then make sure you don't affect someone else the same way! Similarly, if someone is at full draw and you've finished shooting. it's pretty obvious that any sudden movement from you will disturb their concentration - so hold on for a moment until they have released before you move off. Etc etc.

Only those with an IQ lower than their shoe size really need it laid out point by point!

I actually find it more off putting if people wait for me to shoot before leaving/ coming onto the line. I become conscious of them waiting for me and nearly always end up coming down so they can get off/ on the line. I can shoot just as well with an air horn going off somewhere (provided it's not right behind my head) as i can in total silence, and anyone at the british uni team champs had to do exactly that!

I know it is sad But Just happened to spot this last night while reading the GNAS Rules of Shooting.

303. Bowstyles The description of bowstyles is given in Part 2. Bowstyles recognised for
Target Archery and additional detail are as follows:
(a) Recurve (Freestyle) – Equipment as defined in Rule 202.
(b) FITA Standard Bow (for FITA Standard Round only) – Equipment as defined in Rule 203
(c) Recurve Barebow – Equipment as defined in Rule 204
(d) Longbow – Equipment as defined in Rule 206
(e) Compound Unlimited – Equipment as defined Rule 207
(f) Compound Limited – Equipment as defined in Rule 208
(g) Crossbow – Equipment as defined in Rule 210.

(h) Exclusions. Archers are not permitted electronic communications devices and headsets in front of the waiting line.

Surely a mobile phone is a communication Device and therefore not allowed on the line even on silent.

A while ago, I was shooting next to a longbow archer, who held their bow sideways when nocking their arrow... I was at full draw when someone kindly warned me not to shoot, the longbow archer had their bow between my string and lower limb!! I'd hate to think what damage and injury would have been caused if I'd released!!

Avalon, is that where they get the name "longbow" from?
