Rik,
I don't think its so much a courtesey but a rule.

304(g) says that an archer shall retire from the line once they have shot their arrows... 'except that an archer may remain on the shooting line to keep company with another archer still shooting'

Well, GNAS rules have a tendency over time to move into line with FITA rules, and I notice that rule 304 puts remaining on the line as an exception to the normal situation ('may remain...'). So, yes, I'd characterise it as a courtesy, and an unnecessary one. If someone is so distracted by the normal things going on around them, they should learn to deal with it. I'm not even sure it refers to the usual leaving the line situation, or whether it's really to deal with the 'last person on the line' scenario...

Of course, with GNAS rules, you have the potential of serial distractions... The guy leaving the line in front of you and the guy taking his place, but that's another issue altogether

My own view is that if you are truly focused on what you are doing you will not notice what anybody else is doing anyway. Appreciated is somebody actualy hits you that's something different.

I have seen certain badminton players complain bitterly about people walking across behind a court when play is in progress. They are always the players who use this as an excuse for their poor performance, what they realy need to learn is how to focus.
Pretty much my view on this.
