RE: Newbie: What injuries have you sustained.....

I'm tempted to slap a parental warning on this thread...may contain scenes of a violent nature. Oof, I feel a bit queasy...

RE: Newbie: What injuries have you sustained.....

Two brass nocks on a compound string.
Two lovely parallel lines on left forearm.
Blood everywhere, through some miracle missed the vein. (Long fingersling combined with very low brace height).

No more brass nocks - see, I learn!

RE: Newbie: What injuries have you sustained.....

my husband, he shoots a compound, sustained a very serious rotator cuff injury through not using the trapezium muscle to dray back his bow at 60lbs. He was out of archery for about 6 months, couldn't comb his hair without pain. He is back with it now, has his bow down to 50lbs and draws back correctly. I must also add that he used to shoot for several hours at a time which obviously was not a good idea. Now he restricts himself more, he has had no further problems.

Nah, just normal hazards associated with any sport, we could be playing football and tearing ligaments, breaking legs, pulling hamstrings, etc, etc.Archery's actually quite tame. If you were to ask Nigel (see secbridarchers reply, above) if its put him off, i know what his answer would be, cos I was shooting with him on sunday and we were both literally dragged from the shooting line after 2 1/2 hours. BTW he's trying to convert me to the dark side, I'm even bidding on ebay for a compound, LOL

Don't do it AA. The bows been in the hospital again today. I think Nigels bow suffers more injuries than all the archers put together. Stick with your recurve, don't move over to the dark side. Besides you've seen what effect it has on Nigel on Bank Holiday Monday.

RE: Newbie: What injuries have you sustained.....

When I started archery, I shot... too well and certainly enjoyed too much shooting.
I got heavier bows and shot a lot, too much in fact; also, my form was far from perfect.
Results: tendinotis of the triceps of the drawing arm and contracture of the deltoïde. I was handicaped for almost 8 months and I started archery again only after 2 years.

I learnt: to stop shooting when something hurts, to drink a lot of water and to do long warming-up before nocking an arrow on the bow...
