Newbie: What injuries have you sustained.....

What injuries have you sustained as a result of participating in archery?

Just wanted to know if there's anything I need to be wary of.

RE: Newbie: What injuries have you sustained.....

I got tendonitis in my drawing forearm when I was learning archery. I eventually learned how to relax the forearm, so it hasn't recurred.

And I once bashed myself on the nose with a stabiliser when I was tossing it in the air and (not quite) catching it.

I was checking my string was on properly when it slipped out my hand at half-draw and the brass nocking points dug into my arm quite badly - lots of blood and a permanent scar!</p>

There's some quite good injury stories over#at Archery Forum#

RE: Newbie: What injuries have you sustained.....

I shoot recurve, but I had this burning desire to try compound. Two or three years ago I bought a compound and used it with a release aid. I was still shooting recurve, so I was shooting which ever bow I felt like shooting at the time. All went well for a few months, till one day while shooting the compound, I released the release aid, quite literally let go of it. It didn’t break my wrist, but it did swell up like a balloon for several days.

When i first started i used to hit my forearm with the string when i released. It got that bad i couldn't bend my arm properly, the bruise was huge!!!!! </p>

It's all okay now and i rarely hit it.</p>

Hope i haven't jinxed it now </p>

RE: Newbie: What injuries have you sustained.....

Most memorable &quot;ouch&quot; incidents occur not when actually shooting but when tweeking and fixing equipment. For example, when I was busy making a bow quiver with a jigsaw, and trying to cut aluminium sheeting. The blade bites into the aluminium and it becomes very mobile, slashing at anything in its path, including fingers and the such. </p>

While shooting, I have suffered wrist slap severely, because I was too lazy to wear an armguard.</p>

Best was when I walked through a door and the bow limbs caught in the frame and I walked into the now stationery cable guard. </p>

Okay, so now do I qualify for any awards???</p>

RE: Newbie: What injuries have you sustained.....

I was responsible for inflicting a wound, a long time ago. Teaching new archer at University. First time she drew up, wearing sleeveless shirt, managed to release string exactly in line with bow shoulder and arm. String passes all along upper and lower arm. Flayed - large strips of skin hanging off, and lots of oozing blood. Fainting by all concerned. She never drew a bow again.

And, of course, most frequent part injured - Pride

ouch!! I think I would have fainted too.

So far, (touch wood) I haven't injured myself but my friend hit her elbow with the string twice on her first lesson and has had a rather large, nasty bruise for the past 2 weeks

RE: Newbie: What injuries have you sustained.....

1: Missed target and put my arrow in the wood surrouding the butt (super butt with wood at two sides). Cue very sharp knife and left hand getting in the way when diggin the arrow out. The blood stain can still be seen on the leather grip of my bow :-)

2: Feather burn on my left hand (don't laugh it bloody hurts) - from the fletchings catching my hand as they pass over. I don't hold the grip so high up now.
