Hey Grant. Good to hear you have designed some of your own gear. It's going to be tough to find somewhere that will make it, though. Particularly the sight. I haven't seen your sight, but i'm guessing 1/2 doz main components, plus the little bits. Tight tolerances. It would take a skilled machinists a few days to make the parts. There's lots of setting up. They would create their own programs from your autocad file.

A machine shops going to charge minimum £25 hour for CNC work. I guess you are looking £600+ via the yellow pages route... if you want to make a good one.

That's about what I was quoted last time I wanted to get it all made (slightly less, but only just). They didn't have a minimum order but of course it was cheaper the more they made. But what would I do with 10+ sights that may or may not snap when I shoot them... I have the designs, but no engineering behind it!

Yep, they may break. (don't forget rattle, jump, grate and wobble.. ) But that's what a prototype is for. If i'm making something like a sight it takes at least 3 versions and lots of tweaks before I get it so i'm happy with it. That's one reason we got into machining ourselves. Total control. I have actually started designing a new one myself and I know for sure the first one will be rubbish!

Grant - if it's engineering advice you want, then talk to me on MSN. I have enough friends in Mechanical Engineering at uni who should be able to sort you out with someone that knows what they're talking about

Grant, If you have a good design, keep it to yourself. Even if it takes a long time to get it made you will be glad you did it.

Merlin

What design software and CNC programs do you guys use to create your equipment?

I'm only curious from a tecchie viewpoint, as I work for a company that sells one of the most advanced design and NC software around, (Catia, by Dassault Systemes) and I just wondered what you guys use?

FYI, I'm not in sales, so dont expect a call, or any canvassers!
