I've got a rowing machine, and that seems to be the only regular workout I do these days - time, time, time. But I do bike around instead of taking the car all the time, so that helps. I do do stretching exercises specifically to strengthen arm / shoulder / back muscles for archery, but I didn't see the sense in buying a stretchband when I have a number of redundant bike inner tubes to hand. A 700C tube doubled up seems to be around the 40 - 42lb mark at my draw length of 30 ins.

If this idea appeals to anybody else, one word of caution. Before you use the tube as an exercise aid, carefuly cut the valve out. You don't want that catching you in the eye if your grip slips!

XC-skiing and Nordic walking are great sports to keep you fit for archery. Really works the shoulders, back and arms!!

Despite spending most of my time in gyms I don't work out. Instead I have to keep repairing the machines that you lot keep breaking

If you haven't guessed it already, I install/service and maintain gym equipment and this is enough excersice for me. Humping a 400lb treadmill up a single flight of stairs while lifting it over the bannister to get round the dog leg is more than enough excersice, especially when you do a big gym that may have 25+ treads plus crosstrainers, spinner bikes etc.

So the thought of getting home and then going down the gym is just not an option, I am however gonna read more about the reversal excersices.

Is it possible to get stronger by typing ???

I'm not doing the gym thing at the moment (for various reasons) but when I was, I was doing a once a week stint on the machines as follows:
bench press - 12 reps 25Kg
shoulder press - ditto
seated lats - 12 reps 28Kg
tricep pushdowns - 12 reps 25Kg
rowing aim for 1500m in 8 minutes
cycling machine 10 minutes keeping up 50 rpm

On days I wasn't shooting or gyming I'd do reversals; 6 dozen morning and evening.

I felt better for the exercise, but I can't tell whether the gym (as opposed to the reversals) had any effect on my shooting.

Has anybody got any experience of the bands which Alternative Sporting Services sell pretty cheaply??
I got one of those bands recently from Quicks, and i make a point of using before every shoot, and I have found results to be very positive. I can get into a 'warmed-up' state of shooting much earlier than if I didn't use it.

Do rugby, badminton and hockey count? I always wonder about the compatability of these (especially the first) with archery but they don't seem to have done much harm. Unfortunately I am currently mothering a scarily keen novice (2 weeks experience, first gold medal at the weekend) who wants gym sessions, so I can escape it no longer. Any suggestions on some good build up exercises for a new shooter? Simple-ish, non scary stuff, preferably.

At the moment, I need to work on strength, stamina.... and everything else
Press-ups with your legs on a raised surface ( on a high bed with hands on floor and if need be a weight on your back ) .
