Building a new Clubhouse and Range

Folks,

I have been given a remit to cost out and look for funding for a new range and/or Clubhouse for Eccles.

What experience have people got of doing this. Cost is a big issue, so I am looking at a self build, pre-fab steel building with steel outer-sheeting and roof to sit on a simple concrete slab. This is about as cheap as you can get. A 6m by 27m building is about 13.5k+vat for an insulated building, plus the cost of the base/fitting out etc. Arrow proofing is a concern. Is this a sensible size. A bit small for 25m, but should be fine for Portsmouth rounds. Too narrow/too wide?

For funding, we have some cash and some local grant options. Has anyone tried going to regional sports areas of Sport England for Archery related grants? We are a single use site. Anyone ever got money out of Sport England for this type of work?

Thanks,

Sponge.

I have been through this about 16 years ago. The range was to be shared with indoor bowls, cricket practise and archery. We were the poor relations so it worked out not too well for us.
The 30m length was fine but the 6m width was too narrow to allow enough archers on the line at once. You lose about 1m each side as the target centre is well in from the walls. So 6m gives 4m usable shooting line.
Height was also an issue. The roof was only high enough in the centre for our recurve archers I don't remember the height, but another 10cm would have made it comfortable for all, even the 6ft 6inch/2m ones.
I hope some of this helps.
Geoff

how big a space do you have where this is to be erected?

http://temporary-buildings.com/index.html

can do them any length and up to 100m wide...and even list building specifically designed for sporting venues ( high ceilings)

They are already on my list for quotes. Quite a few like them.

As for space, we could drop in a 30m by 10m building, and still have an 18 boss outdoor shoot and 180 yard clout.

Size is not the issue, cost is! As Meta points out, you could do a nice indoor Clout shoot in the B&Q at the Trafford Centre.

I suppose one of the problems with these "lightweight" buildings is security - no point in having a nice building which can be trashed by the vandals...

How do you go about finding a field in the UK?? Apart from asking every farmer in the area? We want to get a field to shoot in which is footballer free, but all the "official" channels have lead nowhere.

In our case, about 50 years ago, someone got he local waterboard to let us use part of a sewage works.

Are any clubs based on in local parks (Bruntwood springs to mind)?

As for the vandals, the steel cladding is pretty strong. Think local industrial units and you have the idea.

Doesn't stop the sods trying to lever the padlock off the clubhouse at the moment though.....

You will need a bit of height otherwise juniors and longbowmen will have problems. Our new clubhouse/bar/range is costing thousands. Pop over for a visit or call on one of the commitee for info. We may have to have a bitumen floor to keep down costs.

Have you seen the facilities we have at New Century Bowmen in Macclesfield? If not it would be worth a visit to see the club house and how we operate our security. We have 16 targets inside, toilets, kitchen, equipment room where we store beginners kit and a workroom with bow press etc. I have some pics if you want to PM me. The builders were local

If you'd like a look around and/or a shoot I'm around quite a lot now I've (more or less) finished Uni for the summer.

I can put you in touch with the member that 'spearheaded' the work.
