Errrrm, Handicap system question

Can I ask somone to have a look at this and tell me if I'm getting it right please. I once asked somone how the handicap system worked and they said "just like golf" - as I've only ever played crazy golf that didn't influence my thinking at all!!
Anyway:
Question 1 - over the year handicaps can reduce, but not increase ?

Question 2 - Handicap at start of year is average of best 3 rounds shot in previous year?

Question 3 - handicap reduces throughout the year - each improvement is added to current handicap and then averaged - rounding to the highest handicap if resulting in a fraction?

Then recalculate at end of year as at question 2

For example, if you start the year on 50, then shoot a 48, your handicap becomes 49. If you then shoot a 45 your handicap becomes 47. If you then shoot a 43 your handicap becomes 45.
If they were the three best rounds you shot, your year start handicap for the following year is (48+45+43)/3 = (rounded) 46

Am I anywhere near having grasped this

Lesson learned - don't volunteer to become records officer

OK, taking that question one step further then: In my last handicap shoot (a Western) I was given an allowance of 1108, shot a 497, and ended up in 1st place with a total of 1605. So far so good.

However - as a Western is 96 arrows, the best anyone could possibly shoot would be 864 (96 x 9). Why therefore does a total score come out at 1605?

If you shoot any round perfectly to your handicap you will always get a handicap adjusted score of 1440. This should allow you to compare between archers and between rounds....assuming everyone shoots consistently to their handicap.

It's the way the allowances are figured out. If you shoot exactly to your handicap, your score (with allowance) will be 1440 (the maximum possible score on a FITA!) for any round. So 1605, just says you shot substantially below your handicap - a couple of hundred points better than your handicap would predict.

Slightly off key but still handicap related, I'm gonna have to change from a left handed archer to a right handed on. So do continue with my current handicap and classification , or should I start afresh ? Lets here your views

The reason the handicap allowance system always works to 1440 (the maximum possible score in any FITA/GNAS round) is that in a handicap competition there can be lots of different rounds shot by competitors but the score + allowance is exactly equivalent between them.

Changing left to right handed makes no difference to the ha'cap/class system any more then changing arrows. Only change is if you change bow division.

I'm pretty sure that your question about changing hand has been raised in Archery UK (within the last couple of years or so) and the conclusion was you were allowed to start again...
