Chest Guard - Why?

All the archers appear to have them, so I assume there is a valid reason, but what is it?

It's obviously not for looks, they are not exactly flattering

To stop the bow string catching loose clothing. Only needed with recurve.

Can also stop "nipple burn"

I'm not sure if the ladies ones offer any level of protection...I've been too embarrassed to ask

They offer a consistent surface to shoot off. Doesn't matter what the clothes are underneath (within reason) as you're shooting off the same chestguard all the time. One less variable.

I asked this question when I first tried archery (94-95). I was told it was to keep the clothing out of the way and protect the nipple area.

"I've never had that problem!" I said boldly, picking up my bow and going to the line. Nock, draw, aim, loose OWWWWWW!

You can ask me, but I never wear one Tark, they look too silly. And all my bras are padded anyway, so I'm well protected.

I'm so glad someone has asked this quesion re. chest guards - I almost thought it was yet another way of getting archers to part with their hard earned cash for no apparent reason!

Never used one myself, never needed to, although I do have man boobs!

It's probably one of things where you don't realise how useful they are until you twang yourself

Just been reading through Murray Elliot's reference guide and he refers to the possibility of fatty tissue being formed which is "clinically difficult to tell apart from cancer tissue without a biopsy". Anyone heard this from any different sources?

That, of course, is only in extreme circumstances (and most likely the individual would start using a chestguard before it got to that stage). I've had all sorts of thoughts on whether or not that is really valid comment, but decided to leave it in for now.

Personally, if I don't wear a chestguard, it badly affects my groups - that's good enough for me. Oh, and I once caught my nipple on a cold day. Nnnnngh!
