Cheating

There was a article recently in one of the daily newspapers about cheating in sports. A quote by GNAS said that it was one of the few sports where cheating was not a problem.

Has anyone heard of any archer being removed from a competition or banned for cheating? I'd heard a rumour that there had previously been someone banned for a short period but didn't know if it was true.

I was talking about something very similar a few days ago. Sometime around 1989, 90 or 91 (cant remember) I was at a tournament somewhere in the West Midlands, where three archers all from the same target were removed from the competition for fixing their scores. It was only when the judge watched the arrows being scored and then realised that what was written down was slightly different. The other archer on the target was oblivious to what was going on. From what I remember, no fuss was made of it on the day, they were just asked to leave. Dont know what happened afterwards.

yep. few years ago i saw a junior get caught out.

it was funny as at the end of the shoot everyones scopes where on his target watching over his arrows (i hasten to add the cheating itself wasnt funny)

i think, as he was quite young, he just got a stern talking to after the shooting, and his score was scrapped. never heard any further follow up.

the other side to consider is not just cheating on scores but with equipment. a couple of time i have heard of people being caught using bows over the legal poundage when weighed later on

There have been at least three cases that I know of, and I have personally witnessed several instances of deliberate / continuous mis-calling arrows, touching arrows and target faces when scoring. Shame cos the people who I saw doing it weren't bad shots.

Didn't have you down for a Guardian reader, Whisky!

I've never seen or suspected an incidence of cheating in archery, but that may well be related to the fact that there's no money in the sport.

I'm told that in South Korea, archers and judges are very "optimistic" in calling line cutters, more so than in the UK. That might verge on cheating in our eyes, but perhaps a bit of cultural relativity should be accepted.

Pride if you want to call it that, I can assume that many can't accept slumps, people exceeding them etc. that resorting to any means possible to save face becomes an option

At my very first FITA Star as a young(er) and (more) gullible archer I was conned into scoring. About half way through the 70m I noticed two holes in the x ring that had not been marked. When I pointed this out to one of the others I was told not to worry about it - so I didnt!!

Two ends later, the same lad, who was on my detail had a really bad loose and missed completely. As we walked to the target he was looking around for the judge and it dawned on me that because there were unmarked holes in the target, there was always a chance that he was planning to claim a bouncer or pass-through and end up making his miss into a ten.

Luckily someone else on the next target had also seen the miss and mentioned it (loudly) as we were walking and I can only think that this may have deterred him from making a false claim.

The arrow was scored as a miss and I have no idea if these ten points cost him a place or not and to be honest I didnt really care.

The errant holes were then marked by another chap on my target but to be honest, I dont think he would have had the bottle to try it again.

Archery is by its nature a trusting sport and the opportunities are there for those who want to cheat..

It is up to the rest of us to make sure they dont get away with it.
