The answer's actually in the same issue of Bow International as the feature on
AIUK...
Easton started out making wooden arrows (and bows, as I recall), pioneered aluminium arrow manufacture, then started manufacturing carbon-wrapped aluminium arrows (ACC/ACE, etc), and then realised that the same technology that they used for making arrows could be used in the manufacturing of tent poles, baseball bats, and a host of other things (and diversifying their business must have made their accountants less twitchy!)
