Reversals

OK, so we all know what these are, don't we?
But why are they called reversals?
Chambers Dictionary:-
"reverse
vt to turn the other way about, as upside down, inside out, in the opposite direction, etc; to invert; to set moving backwards; to overturn (a decision) on appeal to a higher court (); to annul; to bring back (); to turn aside ().
vi to move backwards or in the opposite direction; to set an engine, etc moving backwards; to return ().
....
[L revers\-are to turn round; partly through Fr]
reversal n the act of reversing."

When I asked this when I was on my one and only invite to GB squad training, I was told it was the action of coming down from full draw that should be done controled and slowly and not the drawing up, sorry didn't ask any further questions as to why, presumed coming down slowly had impact on different areas of the same muscle groups.
