Tie breaks

(Prompted by the discussion in the AIUK League section)
I have a logic problem with settling ties on golds. Say we have two archers each shooting three arrows. A shoots 9,7,5; B shoots 7,7,7. Everyone assumes that, in a tie-break, the one with more golds should be the winner. But why? B is clearly shooting tighter groups, and is therefore the more accurate archer. When ties are broken on hits, the archer with more hits wins, because his grouping is more accurate. So why not with Golds? Can anyone find me the rule (GNAS or FITA) that actually says it is the HIGHER number of golds that wins?

this one from FITA rule book 3 ?

8.6.5.1 For ties occurring in all rounds, except for those ties as set out below (8.6.5.2):
• Individuals and Teams:
- Greatest number of 10's (inner 10’s for compound);
- Greatest number of 9's;

RE: Tie breaks

The system has to be practical else the results only become available three weeks from Thursday. Nobody ever said the rules had to be fair.

RE: Tie breaks

Is a 7,7,7 necessarily a tighter group? Not if one is at 12 o'clock, one is at 5 o'clock and one at 7 o'clock - against 9,7,5 all at the same o'clock surely?

RE: Tie breaks

had this debate a number of times. (usually when I'm shooting 54's with all 9's)
However think of it as direct hits in battle. You would be better off with 1 killing shot, a near miss and a far miss than 3 near misses.
