I just thought of something... I think that possibly one of the main problems with the current dress code is that it has been conceived, rather than based on tradition.
When I play squash, I usually wear a polo, shorts and trainers. As do those who compete.
When I play(ed) football, I usually wear a football shirt, shorts, football boots and shin guards. As do those who compete.
When I play(ed) tennis, I would wear a tennis shirt, shorts and tennis shoes. As do those who compete.
When I do archery training, I wear t-shirt (sometimes), shorts or trousers and flip-flops. Can't say I've ever seen anyone compete in this country lacking a shirt or wearing flip-flops.

Where other sports have had a "dress code" designed around the type of exercise/movement they are doing, it seems archery has had a "dress code" conceived.

That's the beauty of whites, they just live in the wardrobe until the next competition. Great way to measure weight gain or loss, the night before frantic try on to see if they still fit.
One pair of white trousers can last for years. Vanish is a wonderful product for mud removal.

MrM, Have you tried this with a son?

Come to that have you tried finding white trousers for boys in the shops? For girls it seems to be much easier to find something suitable.

My lad (13) will not wear the crimplene-esc bowls trousers that are available and cricket whites are generally not white but more of a cream these days. (see this thread: http://www.archery-interchange.com/f...ead.php?t=5613)

He is happy to wear his utility trousers that are green (not camos) but they are not the 'correct' green.

I too am 46 so neither young nor a fossil but I do believe that many parents will hold their charge back from the POTENTIAL of being turned away and being left, subsequently, embarassed and disappointed and this is detrimental to the sport.

Hi Cimbian,

Actually the white's she wears are from the boys section of JJB sports - there weren't any in the girls section at all! Show your son the pics of the Junior Nationals in the current Archery UK to see 250 odd youngsters mostly wearing white trousers - it might show him it can be cool!

Good idea to look at pictures of the Junior Nationals, most kids there wear white. My son Cal is 14, has competed for years and has always worn white, generally bought from either JJB or the Sports ****** cheapie sports shop. Ok, some of them have stripes down the side, but that's never been a problem with any of the judges.

A few juniors bring their whites and get changed, but most just turn up wearing them, I've never heard them moan about the colours, they're too busy talking about the latest real life tv guff/bands/books/you name it, anything but archery actually!!

Why is "s o c c e r" being asterixed??? Is this still from ages ago???

Touché, MrM. Touché!

We looked in JJB and the other high-street stores but couldn't find any whites that didn't have stripes down the legs etc.

The concept of wearing whites is no problem for him but we have not found anything that complies with the regs, apart from the bowls gear and this he definately sees as uncool.

I have found doctor's whites and chef's whites but these are designed to be worn indoors so are too thin for cold weather. Painter's whites are heavy, but possibly too heavy. If the regs allowed one or two stripes down the legs then no-one would have any problems to find whites and would be a very simple ammendment to the rules.

Thanks for the pointer to JJB and we'll take another look.

Her's have stripes downh the sides and the words Reebok in red - nice light weight material! She's used them for all this season at at least 20 Record status shoots and never had any complaints - even as a member of the England Home Nations team at this year's Junior FITA star at lilleshall - she's in the pics on the mayflower web site with her team mates! Quite agree that flanelette etc would not be good!

I sawn the coolest trousers ever on sale in JJB's the other day - they were for dancers In the ladies section!!

while coolmax material, pockets down the bum, articulated knees, wide legs with elastic at the bottom just to pull them in a bit.

there were similar white cotton ones too that I tried on, but decided I was too old and staid to pull the coolness off

Hi Guys, just wondering at shoots where it says 'GNAS dress, or club colours', are AIUK shirts permitted or not because its not technically a club?

or is it subjective and best to ask the people running the show?
