Practising on the day of a Comp?

What are the rules governing practice before a tournament?

I've entered the Middx Champ's in February, and I'm shooting the lunchtime session, which got me to thinking that there's a good few hours before I need to be there to get some practice in. Is this allowed?

I know they do it in the H2H at the Olympics, in a practice field, but I just wondered out of curiousity, as you're only "supposed" to enter one score per day (for instance) if you shoot a double round, etc.

I believe as long as you are doing it somewhere else practice is OK. At my first ever couple of FITAs at Lilleshall this year there was a seperate practise field, and you could use it at any time even during the lunch break.

I did have a fantasy that if ever I won the littery I would buy a larger trailer of some sort, and reinforce it so that I could tow it to any venue and get a few dozen arrows shot to get past my first few ends of rubbish!

They let you practice at lunch? Last time I was at a FITA (a while ago, I admit) that wasn't allowed. I wonder whether that was simply the judges throwing their weight around?

I can't be absolutely about the lunch practice, but I think so....I was too busy trying to recover from the morning, and force a bacon butty down my neck.

For tournaments under GNAS rules, Rule 304(j) says:...no practice is allowed on the ground the same day, except that six arrows may be shot as sighters....after competitors have come under judge's orders at assembly" Rule 403 (indoors) says two ends of sighters.
Under FITA rules (Book 1 3.19) "Practice may take place on the tournament range...for a minimum of 20 minutes and a maximum of 45 minutes on all days".
And 3.19.1.3 says "Other practice facilities must be made available...at least five days before the beginning of the competition". It does not seem to say that these facilities may or may not be used between distances (ie at a lunch break).

Also at the couple of FITA 70m + Head-to-Head there was practice allowed on the practice area at any time between the end of the 70m seeding and the head-to-head section, and during the h-2-h rounds.

It seems that coming back to Ffish's original question, he would be allowed to do it as long as it is at a completely different venue. There would I am sure be no problem for example if you have access to your own club facilities, or can shoot on your own land.

Why assume the worst which is that Judges throw their weight around? I've never seen practice at a full FITA comp, only at a H2H.

Spare a thought for the judges, most comps I'm at we're lucky to get 40mins for lunch, if practice was allowed then presumably it would be timed practice, which requires a judge, they need to eat too.

Thank goodness for the people who actually have the facts, AKA the rulebook to keep us right, instead of all these conclusions that are jumped too!!!

Imagine how good it would be though to get sighters for 50m? No more, ok that was a crap sight mark as the first three scoring arrows are in the blue/ red.

Its a portsmouth, so no practice at the tournament ground. According to the rule furface quoted, practice at a different ground should be fine. I'd suggest you don't overdo it though - a portsmouth isn't many arrows, but you don't want to be knackered before you start. Its all about the pre-tournament taper...
