this time last year I wouldn't have thought for a minute I'd be shooting anywhere but the club!

One of the nice things about this sport is that (with only a few exceptions) anyone of any ability can enter any tournament and, in many instances, wind up shooting alongside some of the more illustrious names in the sport.

I guess that was one of the big attractions for me as a latecomer - I thought it would be difficult to get involved, expecting those already there to have 'been there, done that'. Whilst many of them undoubtedly have, they certainly don't let it stop them welcoming newcomers as fellow enthusiasts - not those I've met so far anyway!

My sentiments exactly! And I'm even older.

What a wonderful bunch of people we all are.

50 is not old, not sure if I can remember that far back though.

The above is what you have to do to get ranked within the GNAS, but how do you get ranked within FITA??

[quote=radsbow]The above is what you have to do to get ranked within the GNAS, but how do you get ranked within FITA??

You get ranked by FITA by shooting tournaments that carry world-ranking points: ie. any of the Continental Grand Prix, Continental Championships (e.g. European Champs.) or World Championships. Indoor tournaments don't count, only outdoor, and to get to shoot at any of these events you have to be selected by your national organisation.

One of the persistent niggles for UK compound shooters has, for many years, been the inability (or unwillingness) of GNAS to fund qualified/selected archers to attend GP's, and a refusal to allow said archers to self-fund. This has made it near-impossible for compound archers to score world ranking points, putting them at a significant disadvantage when competing against other ranked archers for a share of the limited sponsorship pot available in this sport.

I'm not 100% sure, but it looks as though this funding issue may be about to change for the better.

By attending competitions where World Ranking points are up for grabs:
Olympics, World Championships, Continental Championships, plus anything else with a sufficiently prestigious field.
I'd note that you only get to go to most of these by qualifying for a national team first...

Fita have a system where old points "age" (have less weight) over time, so for example a win at the last Olympics counts for more than a win at the previous one, and points gained at less prestigious comps (smaller field, less well ranked archers) count for less as well... Details are on the FITA website:

I think the GNAS rankings are a sham, and have been since they were introduced in their current format. It's a very illogical system and doesn't reflect the ability of archers across the country.
But if you want to see my rantings, go to the letters pages of the Archery UK in Spring 2005. (I think that's the issue!)
