When I was a kid (pre-internet days) I was thrilled to find the recipe for gunpowder in a library book (you can see why I did chemistry...). No, I never tried it as getting hold of potassium nitrate was a little tricky... that's when I discovered just how potent little charges made from crunched-up (non-safety) matches can be...
Of course, in these days of internet bomb-making instructions little things like black powder and picric acid are old hat, but in my day it was somehow more innocent, that sort of normal schoolchild discovery of how to blow things up (albeit on a small scale) has gone out of it now, along with making magnesium flares and stinkbombs...
As for fire-arrows.... hmm, when I was a venture scout I do remember a method of lighting campfires known as the "flaming arrow" for which we used a wire-guided arrow- powered by a little rocket rather than a bow though I seem to recall.
Oh happy days... (and yes, I still have all 8 fingers and both thumbs...)
