Keeping Warm !

I suppose in common with a lot of clubs, mine doesn't have proper indoor shooting facilities so we shoot the 'indoor' rounds outside. It means that scores for a Portsmouth don't actually count, and when we shoot a Frostbite as we did yesterday, you have a very clear idea of where the name came from!

Having posted a **** score of 282 for yesterday's effort because I was so cold, I am wondering if anybody has any sensible suggestions for keeping warm without wearing so many layers you end up like the michelin man and unable to move properly.

I find that a long sleeve thermal vest, two tightis t-shirts and a gillet seem to work well and isn't too bulky.

I also wear long thermal underwear, wind-proof hill walking pants, nice big walking boots with gators (stops the wind going up my pants), walking socks, and a nice big wooly hat. Oh, and let's not forget my big belly warming y-fronts....

Cool

Well Thunk, the secret has to be layers that dont restrict movement. I wear a long sleeve roll neck under the top polo shirt, ( much to my wifes sense of dress standards!) then a body warmer removed to shoot. A warm hat is a must, as is warm socks and boots. Gloves as needed! hip flask is optional!!!

Cotton T-shirt, rugby shirt, Berghaus Pac-lite Gortex top, wind/water-proof walking trousers, big booits, warm woolly socks, Barnsley FC beanie, plenty of cigars and coffee.

I believe that cotton next to the skin is discouraged, as it absorbs sweat and can actually be chillier. A good breathing synthetic is best.
Keeping the feet warm is essential. I find I can shoot in relatively light trousers/shirts as long as I have warm feet. And a hat. But, there again, I do have a massive amount of portable built-in insulation.

If you don't like wearing synthetics, silk is not only thin, but extremely warm. You can get silk thermals. I like a gilet to keep my torso warm, too.

Who's talking about sweating? I wear it to keep warm not to get hot.

Forgot to mention the silk boxer-shorts.

Now those I wear to get HOT!

I use just about the same as you, but I acquired some British Airways in flight PJ's which are light cotton interlock and ideal as long underwear, with a very thin T-shirt underneath and a thin sweatshirt on top. Shot Sunday in complete comfort. Thin golf windproof deals with drizzle/snow/wind.

Oh and I'm with MMick on the inbuilt insulation!

Dave

Standard cold weather advice is lots of thin layers, topped off by something windproof. We have the luxury ATM of a barn with heaters at the shooting end. Good insulating shoes/boots are still a must, even when we go over the top & put the carpet tiles down (cue comments about soft southerners) ;P
