Tiller Girls.
During the time of war, the munitions factories were awash with the ladies of the towns whilst their men folk were off to war. To help save time on the battle field (such as Crecy) the bows sent to the army were tiller adjusted in these factories by the said ladies. Over time these ladies became affectionately know by the fighting archers as "The Tiller Girls".

I thought that “The Tiller Girls” danced on the “tiller” of a ship and therefore are navy girls
