Oliver and the cabletie...

My 4 year old son recently managed to put a cabletie around his neck and pull it so tight that he was as red as a beetrood, with blue lips and dark rings around his eyes.

Fortunately, my other son called me and I was able to cut the cabletie off, but with a lot of difficulty, because it was almost cutting into his neck. I doused his neck with olive oil to allow me to get the sidecutter blade under the tie. There were bloodblisters all aorund the area where the sidecutter went, giving you an idea just how tight the thing was!

Another 2 minutes and the outcome would have been very different.

Whether he qualifies for the Fonz award or not, please learn from this little incident and put those cableties well out of reach!

Thankfully, he is fine. He was running around after a few minutes. Mum and I were not okay at all for about 2 hours afterwards... staring into the distance and muttering "what if.." a lot...

If this never happens to you, I will be very pleased! Tell everyone you know about this, because almost every person I have shared this story with has replied that they have cableties in a drawer or in the garage and that they never perceived them to be dangerous at all.

It is a good job you kept your cool and dealt with it so quickly.

Good job your other son called you.

Glad to hear that all are now OK.

Phew, glad to hear that he's OK it just goes to show how dilligent you have to be as parents, something as inoccuous as a little piece of plastic, but children are such curious animals I wonder what this does? but dont think about the dangers. luckily all my children are teenagers and up but the problems dont go away they just get bigger as they get older.Once again glad to hear he's OK. lock them cable ties away somwhere. Best Regards John

Thanks John. Right now, I can leave cableties anywhere I like in the house, and Oliver will not go near them. He learned a very important lesson, about not putting ANYTHING around the neck, and it seems to have really stuck. Nathan (my older son) was also pretty shaken by the whole incident and has also learned the lesson.
