When to start bare shaft tuning yourself.

The question of when to start tuning your bow has come up a few time mostly asked by improving archers who have changed limbs and arrows. The answer I post here is a guide.

Borrow a mismatched bare shaft from another archer. It does not matter if it is too stiff or too soft as long as the mismatch is not too far out. Shoot a group of three of your arrows and then shoot the mismatched bare shaft. When you can get a consistant result that agrees with what you know about the the borrowed bare shaft then you are ready to start bare shaft tuning your own bow.

It's a good idea Jerry,it will work well for someone who suspects their arrows are a mismatch. It will show which way to go next ;stiffer or weaker.

while we're threatening to get another thread removed....
Does colder weather make bare shafts any stiffer?

serious question!

Bare shaft shooting shall become interesting as soon as one is able to release in a fairly consistent fashion.

Conversely, bare shaft shooting also is an indicator of the release quality and consistency.

I know of some shooters who would have been interested in shooting bare shafts only but have been prevented from doing so by regulations stipulating that in a competition one should use fletched shafts. They eventually have used very minimal fletches
