At Selby one judge called 5 mins to half the line then another did the other half so everyone heard - and everyone complained we had not had enough of a break !! Support your local judge - they do a good job.

I'm keeping my power dry on judges for the moment, I've only been to one outdoor shoot so far and they were faultless. imo

Thought I must have nodded off without realising it because I never heard the 5 minute warning and was at the other end of the line when the whistle went !!

Not very good for the digestion, or for being in a cool and composed state of mind on the line for the first post-lunch end !

Things to remember about most clubs is that:
1) Many clubs do-not have access to electricity on the field of play(and it costs quite a bit to get it installed).
2) T/O is a voluntry position (as are all committee posts) so don't knock people for trying if you aren't prepared to volunteer yourselves(if you think you can do a better job).
3) If you can't hear anything ask for it to be repeated to you.
4) if its a T/O's first competition confidence is lacking and so tends to be nervous and things will be quiter as a result.
5) Make sure you, as an archer, are aware of the Rules Of Shooting for the comp you are attending so you do understand what is said and are confident in yourself that what you know is mostly correct. judges are there to tell you if something is wrong or to help you understand the rules, so if you dont understand just ask.

I personaly will be using an amplifier at our burleigh shoot so i can be heard esaily (Roland £79 works for 20 hours on 6 AA batteries)

The main thing to remember is to make a suggestion after the assembley or shoot to the T/O that the anouncements could do with being louder next time.

As soon as there is silence the organiser asks for all the archers to 'come closer' . How stupid is that! The three (or four) judges only have to take a couple of paces forward - but NO, nearly a hundred have to shuffle begrudgingly forward and even then some at the back can hardly hear what is being said. When it comes to a judge addressing the entire shoot at the end of a set piece no-one along the shooting line can hear him however loudly he shoots. Then again, at the conclusion of the competition, the calling out of raffle numbers followed by the presentation of prizes can be another problem. My question is simply; WHY OH WHY HAVE ORGANISING CLUBS NOT DRAGGED THEMSELVES INTO THE 21st CENTURY AND GOT THEMSELVES AT LEAST ONE ELECTRONIC, PORTABLE SOUND RE-INFORCEMENT PIECE OF EQUIPMENT. If for no other reason, the calling of "FAST", if the occasion should arise, would be a bit more effective than a plaintive scream from a distant judge who cannot be heard anyway.
Because it is nigh on impossible to get a profesional judge for a shoot i ofton have to stand in as a judge . consiquently i do not get to shoot very ofton , It would be nice if all these people with all there good advice were to do the same , when asked there faces light up with horror at having to give up there archery time ,and some ridiculus excuse comes blurting out of how busy they are or that they have an important appointment some where . and then sit back and complain about them old men . I sugest you try standing around for six or seven hours while others enjoy themselves , when it is cold the archers are at least moving around they are standing and getting colder by the hour and have to stay focused for how ever long the shoot lasts . and the payment for giving up there time bloody complaints . but not from my club members i hope . and i do not do whispering John

while i have strained to hear judges and officials sometimes (definitely NOT you though john ! ) i do appreciate the time and effort volunteer judges (and all the other volunteers who help to run shoots) put in to let the rest of us have some fun

as has been said - make sure youve done your homework and if there is no PA gear then surely just ask for clarification on something you didnt hear

Because most clubs probably run on a tight enough budget as it is without having to purchase PA equipment for the 1 tournament they run per year.

I agree it can be very hard to hear what the judges are saying, I tend to smile a lot, and clap when everyone else does.

I think the 'run through' is thought to be unnecessary for most people, they are all old hands and know what to do, which can make you feel a bit of a div if you are new! The first time I shot a FITA 25, the judge there was brilliant and explained the whole rigmarole succinctly and expertly! For which I was very grateful.

I still tend to check with target partners though ("What are we shooting again?" "Are these still sighters?'") But then hey... I don't know my waiting line from my elbow
